LONG BEACH, Calif. -ย The third-ranked Bruins made it 3-for-3 in mercy-rule victories this weekend, defeating Boston U. 10-2 in six innings on Saturday at the LBSU Softball Complex.
UCLA (22-0) recorded 13 hits from eight different players, as freshman Briana Perez posted three and senior Kylee Perez, junior Brianna Tautalafua and sophomore Bubba Nickles each had two hits. In the circle, freshman Holly Azevedo improved to 7-0, striking out one in six innings and giving up two runs, six hits and three walks.
The Bruins scored four times in the bottom of the first. Briana Perez led off with a single to right and stole second, Kylee Perez walked and both moved up on a wild pitch. An RBI grounder to second off the bat of redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan plated Briana Perez made it 1-0, while Tautalafua followed with a single to right to bring in Kylee Perez with UCLA's second run. One out later, Nickles singled to left and freshman Julie Rodriguez reached on an infield single to second to plate Tautalafua to make it 3-0, with Nickles scoring on an error by the Boston catcher to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead.
Boston U. (8-12) got on the board in the top of the second when Emma Wong scored on a wild pitch, but UCLA responded with four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kinsley Washington led off with a walk and both Perez sisters reached on bunt singles to load the bases. One out later, Tautalafua doubled to center to bring in Washington and Briana to make it 6-1. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia followed with a single up the middle to plate Kylee and Tautalafua to extend the lead to 8-1.
In the fourth, an RBI single by Emily Morrow gave the Terriers a second run. UCLA would invoke the mercy rule for the 12th time this season with two in the sixth. Freshman Malia Quarles doubled to open the inning and was pinch-run for by junior Stevie Wisz, who scored on a Nickles single to left to make it 9-2. Nickles then scored the mercy-rule run on three successive wild pitches to give the Bruins a 10-2 victory.
The Bruins will round out the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday, facing #16 Ohio State at 11:30 a.m. and #21 Long Beach State at 2 p.m. Starting times have been moved back 90 minutes from their originally scheduled times to better prepare the field with overnight and morning rains in the forecast.
