SAN FRANCISCO -- Sixteen Bruins have been selected to the 2018 Pac-12 Conference Swimming & Diving All-Academic teams, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Friday.
Senior Marie-Pierre Delisle was named to the First Team, while three Bruins were awarded Second Team honors. Twelve UCLA student-athletes were chosen as Honorable Mention recipients.
The honor marks the third for Delisle, but the first as a member of the First Team. The San Jose, Calif. native was picked for the Second Team in 2015-16 and 2016-17. Delisle, a Civil Engineering major, held a 3.75 grade-point average (GPA) at the time of her selection. In the pool, the senior recently shined at the 2018 Pac-12 Swimming & Diving Championships, where she turned in a time of 54.45 in the 100 Fly "C" final.
Maddy Burnham, Katie Grover and Lisa Kaunitz, meanwhile, were named to the Second Team. Burnham twice previously earned Honorable Mention recognition, while the Second-Team nod marked the third for Grover. Freshman are not eligible for recognition, making Lisa Kaunitz's honor the first of her career. Burnham, a native of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, stood out in the Bruins' late season meet with California (Jan. 27), posting times of 24.61 in the 50 Free and 53.71 in the 100 Free. Grover recently qualified for the first NCAA Championships final round of her career, turning in a time of 1:44.36 in the preliminary round of the 200 Free. Distance-specialist Lisa Kaunitz participated in the 400 IM and 1650 Free finals at Pac-12s.
Earning Honorable Mention recognition were seniors Natalie Amberg, Sarah Kaunitz, Ciara Monahan, Carly Reid and Madison Varisco, juniors Eloise Belanger, Elena Escalas, Sabrina Kwok, Madeline Russell, Traci Shiver and Sandra Soe and sophomore Kenisha Liu.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and participate in at least half of their team's scheduled regular season events.
In January, the Bruins were named a Scholar All-America team by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America for maintaining a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during Fall 2017. They were one of 430 schools (688 teams) to earn the honor.
