BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The 16th-ranked Bruins are in second place after 36 holes on Friday at the Jackrabbit Invitational at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, while freshman Devon Bling is also in second in the individual race.
UCLA was tied with UNLV for first after 18 holes, as both teams shot 5-under 283s to lead UC Santa Barbara by two strokes. In the afternoon, the Bruins posted a 7-under 281 and are at 12-under 564 through two rounds, two strokes back of first-place Nevada (-14, 562).
Bling was also tied for first after 18 holes following a 5-under 67. Starting on hole #4, he made an eagle on the par-5 14th to go with four birdies on #4, #5, #12 and #1, adding just one bogey. Bling shot a 3-over 69 in round two, making four birdies on #7, #11, #16 and #18 and only one bogey. His 36-hole score is 8-under 136, as he is one back of Nevada's Grant Booth (-9, 135).
Senior Tyler Collier, junior Cole Madey and sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara were all tied for 11th after 18 holes, shooting even-par 72s. Collier made four birdies on #2, #4, #6 and #17 and four bogeys in round one. He moved up a spot into a tie for 10th (-1, 143) after his second round, posting a 1-under 71 in the afternoon. He made three birdies on #4, #9 and #11 and two bogeys.
In the morning, Madey balanced his books with four birdies on #6, #7, #11 and #1 and four bogeys. He remained tied with Collier after his second 18, also shooting a 1-under 71. He made three birdies in a row on holes #4-#6, as well as #14 and #16, to go with four bogeys.
Yoshihara recorded a pair of birdies on #12 and #14 and two bogeys in the morning. In the afternoon, he shot a 2-over 74 in round two and is tied for 22nd (+2, 146). He birdied his first hole, #4, as well as #7 and #14, adding five bogeys.
Junior Patrick Murphy, playing as an individual, and freshman Eddy Lai both posted 2-over 74s in round one and were tied for 28th. Lai recorded three birdies on #4, #7 and #16 and five bogeys. He improved into a tie for 14th (E, 144) following a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. He made five birdies on #4, #7, #11, #14 and #1 and three bogeys.
Murphy tallied four birdies on #4, #9, #11 and #14 to go with two bogeys and two doubles in round one. In the afternoon, he tallied a 3-over 75 and is tied for 35th after 36 holes at +5 (149). He made two birdies on #4 and #9, three bogeys and a double.
Junior Jack Ireland, also playing as an individual, was tied for 50th after a 5-over 77 in round one. He made a birdie on his first hole, #18, as well as his last hole, #17, to go with four bogeys and a triple. Ireland moved up 18 spots following a 1-under 71 in round two and is tied for 32nd (+4, 148). He birdied five of his first eight holes (#18, #2, #4, #5 and #7) to go with two bogeys and a double.
