
No. 18 UCLA Falls at Long Beach State, 5-2

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Chase Strumpf hit a two-run home run and Nick Scheidler threw 4.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen as the No. 18 UCLA baseball team fell to Long Beach State, 5-2, on the road Tuesday night from Blair Field.
Long Beach State's Jacob Hughey (1-0) earned the win as he tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Chris Rivera collected his ninth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Long Beach State scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning as Jarren Duran hit a RBI-triple and came around to score on a ground ball to the second baseman off the bat of Hughey.
After LBSU tacked on another run in the second inning, UCLA responded in the top of the third inning when Strumpf hit a two-run home run down the left-field line to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Both teams went scoreless for the next three innings until the seventh when the Dirtbags scored two runs on a two-out single to left field by Hughey for the 5-2 advantage.
Starter Jack Ralston (0-2) suffered the loss allowing three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Scheidler came in for Ralston and tossed 4.2 scoreless innings in relief scattering just three hits with four strikeouts.
UCLA (19-9) scored two runs on three hits with no errors, while Long Beach State (13-20) finished the game with five runs on eight hits with two errors.
The Bruins continue their four-game road swing this weekend when it travels to Salt Lake City for a three-game Pac-12 series at Utah beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
