Jelenicki Walk-Off Sends Bruins to Series Win

LOS ANGELES - On Senior Day, senior Madeline Jelenicki had both runs batted in, including a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the top-ranked Bruins closed the regular season with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Arizona State on Saturday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins improved to 50-4 overall and 20-4 in Pac-12 play, while the Sun Devils fell to 43-11 and 16-8 in league action.

Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia earned the win to move to 21-2, striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up one hit and one walk. She struck out the side in order in the eighth and had a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh. Freshman Holly Azevedo started and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run, two hits and one walk. She retired the first eight batters of the game, adding a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. Azevedo struck out the side in the first and two in the fourth.



The Bruins scored the game's first run in the fourth, as freshman Briana Perez led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a Garcia fly out and scored on a single to left-center by Jelenicki. Arizona State tied things up in the fifth on a homer by DeNae Chatman.

The game remained tied until the ninth. Arizona State stranded a pair in its half and the Bruins ended things in their half with two outs, as Jelenicki launched her sixth homer of the season to left to give UCLA a 2-1 victory.



The Bruins find out where their postseason journey begins on Sunday at 7 p.m. when the NCAA selection show airs on ESPN2.
