STILLWATER, Okla. - UCLA recorded the best round of day two of the NCAA Championships, blistering the Karsten Creek Golf Club with a 9-under 279 to take a five-shot lead after 36 holes. The Bruins, who were 15 shots better than their first round, are the only team under par through two rounds (-3, 573) and lead Alabama (+2, 578), who was the only other team to shoot under par on Saturday.
"I was excited for the fact that we were playing in the morning today, and just looking at the forecast, knowing that it wasn't going to be very windy at all," said head coach Carrie Forsyth. "This is as score-able as this course will be."
Junior Lilia Vu tied for the low round of the day with a 4-under 68 to move into fourth place (-4, 140) and just one off the overall lead held by Alabama's Cheyenne Knight, Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan and Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho (-5, 139). Vu was bogey-free on her front nine, making birdies on No. 2, 5 and 9. She added another one on the 13th before her first dropped shot on No. 15. But the junior ended strong with a birdie on the 18th to finish at 4-under.
"I think I just played smart today", Vu said. "I gave myself a lot of opportunities, and made all the must-make putts. I didn't have many mistakes because I think I just knew where was accessible to the pin and where to leave myself to avoid mistakes. I think I'm just going to play the same game I did today, just don't be too greedy because when you get greedy the outcomes aren't that good sometimes."
Freshman Patty Tavatanakit is three back of the individual lead, sitting in a tie for fifth at 2-under 142. In her second-straight, 1-under 71, she made four birdies on No. 4, 7, 11 and 15, one bogey and one double. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano was six strokes better from Friday to Saturday, posting a 3-under 69. She is tied for 11th (E, 144). Galdiano's lone blemish came on the third, as she made birdies on No. 6, 8, 15 and 17. Junior Beth Wu is tied for 24th (+3, 147), notching a 1-under 71 in her second round. She made four birdies in her first 10 holes on No. 5, 7, 9 and 10 to go with three bogeys. Sophomore Clare Legaspi is tied for 77th (+10, 154), shooting a 3-over 75, making a birdie on the third and four bogeys, while making nine-straight pars on her second nine.
The Bruins will tee off the first hole in round three on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. CT/5:30 a.m. PT in the order of Legaspi, Wu, Galdiano, Tavatanakit and Vu. Live scoring will be available here. The top 15 teams after Sunday's round will advance to the final round of stroke play on Monday.
