BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Madeline Jelenicki hit a pair of home runs, while junior Brianna Tautalafua and redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan also left the yard, as the top-ranked Bruins finished off a sweep of No. 24 California on Sunday with a 10-5 victory at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bruins improved to 48-3 overall and 18-3 in Pac-12 play, running their winning streak to 14 games, while the Golden Bears fell to 34-16 and 7-13 in league.
UCLA had 11 hits from seven different players, as Jelenicki, Jordan, Tautalafuaย and sophomore Bubba Nickles all had two-hit contests. In the circle, redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia picked up the victory (19-1), striking out two in 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief. She gave up just three hits and no walks. Senior Selina Ta'amilo started and struck out one and walked two in an inning of work. Freshman Holly Azevedo tossed 2 2/3 frames of relief, fanning four and giving up five runs and five hits.
The Bruins scored first with three runs in their opening at-bat. With one out, freshman Briana Perez walked and stole second. After a walk to Jordan, Garcia doubled to left-center to plate Perez to make it 1-0. Nickles followed with a single up the middle to bring in Jordan and Garcia to bring the lead to 3-0.
UCLA added another run in the third on a homer to right-center by Jordan, her team-best 10thย long ball, to make it 4-0. Cal tied the score with four runs in its half of the third, as Mikaylaย Coelho had a two-run double and Kobie Pettisย hit a two-run homer.
Jelenicki gave the Bruins the lead back for good in the fourth, hitting a solo homer to open the inning, her fourth of the season.ย
In the sixth, UCLA left the yard twice. Nickles singled to right to open the inning and Jelenicki belted her second homer of the game and fifth of the year to left-center to make it 7-4. The very next pitch to Tautalafua was sent halfway up the left-field bleachers, her eighth of the season, to extend the lead to 8-4.
The Bruins tacked on two more in the seventh. Perez led off with a single to right, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a Jordan single to right and scored on a Garcia grounder to make it 9-4. With sophomore Jenna Crawford running for Jordan and at second after the Garcia grounder, she would score when Nickles reached on an error to plate the Bruins' 10th run.
California made it 10-5 with a two-out RBI double by Taurie Pogue, but a relay from junior Zoe Shaw to senior Kylee Perez to junior Paige Halstead cut down a run at the plate to end the game.
The Bruins open up a three-game home series at Easton Stadium against Arizona State on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
