Bruins Top Grand Canyon 2-0 in Exhibition Opener

August 14, 2018 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team opened its 2018 campaign with a 2-0 exhibition win over visiting Grand Canyon University on Tuesday night at Drake Stadium.

The Bruins potted a pair of goals in the first half to cement the decision.

Senior defender Matthew Powell opened the game's scoring in the 35th minute. Already pressed up for a corner kick, Powell hung around the net and was rewarded after UCLA maintained possession and got service from the right side from senior defender Erik Holt, who found Powell at the far post for an easy header.

Just seven minutes later, sophomore forward Santiago Herrera put the Bruins up by a pair, getting a touch on a Joab Santoyo cross from the left side and redirecting it inside the far post.

The Bruins will host another exhibition before the regular season commences, welcoming UC Irvine on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the team's first game in the brand-new Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
