LAKE ELMO, Minn. - Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit blistered the Royal Golf Club on Wednesday, firing a 9-under 63 to come back and win the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. Tavatanakit set a new course record and tied the UCLA mark, which was first shot by senior Lilia Vu in 2017 (Silverado Showdown).
As a team, the Bruins posted the second-best round of the day with a 10-under 278, but fell two strokes shy of Alabama (-28, 836). UCLA finished at 26-under 838, which established a new school record for a 54-hole event. The previous best was 24-under 840 at the 2005 UNLV Collegiate.
Tavatanakit, who started her final round tied for ninth and seven shots back of the lead, was even par through her first eight holes after making bogey on the fourth and birdie on the seventh. Then the sophomore kicked it into high gear, making seven consecutive birdies (No. 9-15) to get into contention. Following a couple of pars on No. 16 and 17, Tavatanakit trailed USC's Malia Nam by one shot, needing a birdie on the par-5 18th to tie or an eagle to win. She made a three on the 18th on Tuesday and would do it again on Wednesday, sinking a 12-foot putt to record the fifth victory of her career.
Vu tied for sixth at 7-under 209 following a 1-under 71 on Wednesday. She made five birdies on No. 1, 2, 10, 12 and 17 to go with four bogeys. Senior Beth Wu tied for 15th (-3, 213), posting a 1-under 71 in her final round. She tallied five birdies (No. 3, 9, 10, 14 and 15) and four bogeys. Junior Mariel Galdiano tied for 18th at 2-under 214. She shot a 2-over 74 in her final 18, making three birdies in a row (No. 8-10) and five bogeys. Junior Clare Legaspi tied for 45th (+6, 222). She shot a 1-over 73, closing with an eagle on the par-5 18th, adding a birdie on No. 15 and four bogeys.
Next up for the Bruins is the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Red Sky Ranch Golf Club (Wolcott, Colo.). The tournament will take place Monday, Sept. 24 through Wednesday, Sept. 26.
