WOLCOTT, Colo. - The top-ranked Bruins are in the thin air and 7,000-foot elevation of the Red Sky Golf Club this week for the Golfweek Conference Challenge. The three-day, 54-hole tournament runs from Monday through Wednesday at the par-72, 6,320-yard Fazio Course.
The starting fivesome for the Bruins will once again be seniors Lilia Vu and Beth Wu, juniors Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi and sophomore Patty Tavatanakit. Monday's play for the Bruins starts at 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. CT off the first tee in the order of Legaspi, Galdiano, Wu, Vu and Tavatanakit.
Joining the Bruins in the 18-team field are Campbell, Central Arkansas, Delaware, Denver, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Jacksonville, Nebraska, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, San Diego State, SMU, Southern Mississippi, TCU, Troy, UC Riverside and Virginia Tech.
The Bruins are coming off their best scoring tournament in program history, shooting a 26-under 838 to finish second at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. UCLA was a combined 22-under in the last two rounds.
Tavatanakit is coming off a masterful final round at the Royal Golf Club, setting a course record and tying the school mark with a 9-under 63 to post the fifth tournament victory of her collegiate career. She started the final round tied for ninth and seven shots back of the lead, but went 9-under in her final 10 holes. Tavatanakit made seven birdies in a row (No. 9-15) at one point, and then trailing by a stroke heading to the final par 5, she made eagle to win by one.
Vu tied for sixth with a 7-under total of 209. Wu was also in the Top 20 with a T-15 showing (-3, 213), as was Galdiano, who tied for 18th (-2, 214). Legaspi tied for 45th (+6, 222).
