Florida State Downs UCLA, 4-1
September 02, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Tallahassee, Fla. - No. 4 Florida State handed No. 2 UCLA its first loss of the season, downing the Bruins, 4-1. UCLA freshman Maricarmen Reyes netted her first collegiate goal, while Seminole freshman Yujie Zhao recorded one goal and two assists.
The Seminoles (5-0-1) struck first after a nearly one-hour weather delay, taking a 1-0 lead at 11:02 after Anna Patten headed in a perfectly-placed cross from Zhao. Kirsten Pavlisko doubled Florida State's lead in in the 36th minute with a hard strike past UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah.
The Bruins (2-1-1) were unfazed, however, cutting the lead in half in the 38th minute on Reyes' curling volley to the bottom left corner just under two minutes after entering the game. It was the first goal allowed by the Seminoles in 2018.
Florida State squelched any of UCLA's momentum early in the second half when Zhao set up Kristen McFarland for a shot from the top of the box that eluded Micah and gave the Seminoles a 3-1 lead.
UCLA had a chance to trim the lead in the 81st minute when Viviana Villacorta got off a hard shot in the box, but Florida State goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger made a quick reflex save. Eight minutes later, Zhao put the game away with her third goal of the year.
The Bruins will return home having gone 1-1-1 on their extended road trip that saw them face three Top 25 teams in nine days, including two in the Top 5. UCLA will next face Pepperdine at Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7pm.
