Bruins Earn Second-Straight Shutout, 2-0 Over Utah
October 13, 2019 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES - No. 22 UCLA recorded its second-straight shutout, defeating Utah, 2-0, behind a pair of goals by freshman Mia Fishel.
Fishel scored a goal in each half, her first coming at 30:31 after a long pass from Kaiya McCullough to Ashley Sanchez down the left side. Sanchez crossed on a half volley to a wide-open Fishel in the box, and Fishel easily found the back of the net to give UCLA a 1-0 lead.
Goal number two came at 50:30 after Chloe Castaneda's cross into the box was poked out by a Utah defender straight to Fishel. The freshman one-timed it past Utah goalkeeper Carly Nelson for the 2-0 lead.
Fishel takes over the team lead in goals scored with seven and is tied with Sanchez for the lead in points with 16.
The Bruins outshot Utah, 17-7, and could have scored even more goals, as three shots hit the woodwork. Sunny Dunphy had a shot ping off the crossbar in the 28th minute, and Delanie Sheehan hit the left post twice, once in each half.
Teagan Micah earned the shutout, her fifth solo shutout of the season. She recorded three saves, while Nelson had seven for the Utes.Brb, gone fishing. ??@FishelMia reels in ?? goals for @UCLAWSoccer and earns the @OpusBank #12Best moment. pic.twitter.com/MEKvYS4M7U
