October 19, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Stanford, Calif. - In a closely-contested battle between two Top 20 teams, No. 2 Stanford came out on top over No. 16 UCLA, 1-0, on the strength of a first-half goal.
Stanford (13-1-0, 6-0-0 in the Pac-12) struck first with a goal by Maya Doms in the 18th minute after the Bruins were unable to clear the ball in the box. Doms looped in a high header over Bruin goalkeeper Teagan Micah to give the Cardinal the early advantage. The Cardinal nearly doubled the lead in the 33rd minute on a shot by Sophia Smith that was saved by Micah. A few seconds later, Micah thwarted another Cardinal scoring opportunity, keeping the Bruins within one.
UCLA, which was held to just two shots in the first half, came out much more aggressively in the second half, earning a pair of corner kicks in the first three minutes of the half. The defense also withstood a dangerous shot by NCAA scoring leader Catarina Macario in the 55th minute, her shot just missing high.
Bruin forward Mia Fishel had two good looks in the box in the 68th minute, her first shot getting blocked, and her second going high. Ashley Sanchez also had a good goal-scoring opportunity in the 86th minute on the counterattack but missed high.
The Cardinal outshot the Bruins in the game, 14-7, and held UCLA to zero shots on goal. Micah made three saves for UCLA, who falls to 9-4-1, 3-3-0.
UCLA will next host Washington on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 8pm in the second game of a doubleheader with the UCLA men's team.
