UCLA Defeated by San Diego, 4-1
October 17, 2019 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team surrendered a pair of goals in the first three minutes and never recovered in a 4-1 non-conference loss to No. 13 San Diego on Thursday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
The Toreros (10-1-1) found the back of the net at the 1:11 mark via Miguel Berry and then scored again just 55 seconds later to record the eventual game-winning goal.
UCLA (5-6-2) made it a one-goal game after Marcony Pimentel scored in the 18th minute, and came agonizingly close to another goal in the waning seconds of the first half, but tallies from Berry in the 34th and Alex Churness in the 56th cemented the result for USD.
Sophomore midfielder Riley Ferch was the catalyst for the Pimentel goal, taking advantage of a pressing USD defense and sending a through ball down the middle of the field for a streaking Eric Iloski.
Iloski ultimately found freshman left back Constantinos Michaelides on the left wing, and Michaelides first-touched a low pass across the 18-yard box to Pimentel at the far post who was able to tap it in for his second goal of the year.
The Bruins came agonizingly close to scoring again with about 20 seconds remaining in the first half. Senior mid Alexis Triadis was able to get himself deep into USD territory on the left side, then danced around a defender at the end line and proceeded towards goal.
Triadis sent a pass back to Ferch just above the six-yard box, and his close-range shot attempt deflected off a Torero defender and came into the path of freshman forward Jefferson Alade at the far post. Alade slid to try and re-direct it into the net but came up just short.
San Diego was led by Berry who notched five points (two goals, one assist) on the night.
UCLA plays its final home games of the regular season next week, hosting Washington on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and Oregon State on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Both contests will appear on Pac-12 Networks.
