WEEK IN REVIEW
The Bruins played just one game last week, dropping a 4-1 decision to then-No. 13 San Diego last Thursday night. UCLA was doomed by a pair of early goals from the Toreros, who netted in the second and third minutes. The Bruins made it a one-goal game after Marcony Pimentel finished off a a Constantinos Michaelides cross in the 18th minute, but USD outscored the home team 2-0 the rest of the way. Miguel Berry had five points (two goals, one assist) to lead the Toreros. The Bruins almost had a second goal just before halftime when a Riley Ferch shot was deflected to a Bruin attacker at the far post, but a re-direct attempt came up just short.
EARLY STARTERS
Early goals have been a common occurence in UCLA games so far this season. A goal has been scored by either UCLA or the opponent within the opening 10 minutes in eight of UCLA's 13 games this year (62%). The Bruins are 3-4-1 in those contests.
TOUGH ROAD
Entering the week, UCLA can boast that it has the toughest schedule in the country. The Bruins lead the NCAA in both past opponents' winning percentage (.639) and cumulative opponents' winning percentage (.635). UCLA's road doesn't get much easier the rest of the way, as future opponents have a combined .627 winning percentage. No other west coast team is in the top-10 for strength of schedule, with the nearest program being Loyola Marymount (No. 11). UCLA has played half of the top-10 teams in this week's TopDrawerSoccer rankings (No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Georgetown, No. 7 Maryland, No. 8 Indiana, No. 10 Stanford).
BRUINS HELPING BRUINS
UCLA has scored 23 goals so far this season (49th nationwide), accruing 28 assists along the way. The Bruins' 1.22 assists per goal is tied for fifth-best in the nation (Michigan leads the NCAA at 1.52). UCLA has recorded at least one assist on 20 of 23 team goals, including eight tallies with two assists.
ILOSKI MAKES HISTORY AGAINST SDSU
Milan Iloski made school history on Oct. 6 in a contest against San Diego State, scoring a program-record five goals in a 5-2 win for UCLA.
The Bruins have been traditionally tough to beat on their home field. Dating back to 2010, UCLA is 66-26-10 (.696) in home games, and has recorded a winning record at home in every season. UCLA is 9-7-2 (.555) at home since moving to Wallis Annenberg Stadium before the 2018 season.
ILOSKI TAKES OVER NATIONAL SCORING LEAD
Thanks to a five-game scoring streak out of the gate and a five-goal performance against SDSU, UCLA junior forward Milan Iloski has now taken over the national lead in a number of categories.
After going unnamed in the TopDrawerSoccer preseason player rankings, Milan Iloski was placed at No. 7 in the soccer outlet's midseason update. In addition, left back Constantinos Michaelides was tabbed as the No. 58 player in the TDS Freshman Top-100. Michaelides has recorded one goal and one assist over 13 games, and has racked up 810 minutes on the pitch so far.
FERCH ON FIRE
Sophomore midfielder Riley Ferch has come into his own in the last few weeks, posting five assists and seven points over his last five games. That stretch includes multi-assist performances against SDSU and Cal and a three-point game against UC Riverside featuring his first NCAA goal. Overall on the year, he has one goal, seven assists, and nine points. His seven helpers are tied for the Pac-12 lead, rank 15th nationally, and match UCLA's team leader in 2018 (Matt Hundley).
RED-HOT OCTOBER
The Bruins have stepped up their offensive production since the calendar turned to October, potting 12 goals in five games. That stretch features three games with three or more goals including a season-high five scores against San Diego State. UCLA's 2.4 goals per game for the month of October is almost double their production from the first eight games of the season (1.38) and would be ranked 11th nationally if extrapolated over the whole season. For October, no other Pac-12 team has more goals or a better GPG rate than the Bruins (Cal has 10 goals, Washington has a 2.25 goals per game rate in October).
ILOSKI TO ILOSKI
Junior midfielder Eric Iloski has earned the primary assist on three of his brother's goals this year - his opening goals against Maryland and CSUN as well as his third goal against SDSU. The brothers have now recorded a point on the same goal on four occasions - Milan and elder brother Brian assisted on an Eric goal against San Diego State on Oct. 15, 2017.
SETTING IT UP
Entering the week, the Bruins have four players with four or more assists on the year. Riley Ferch has a team-high seven, while Matt Powell, Cody Sundquist, and Eric Iloski all have a career-high four. UCLA is the only program in the Pac-12 that can boast four players with 4+ assists. Overall, UCLA ranks second in the league and 21st nationally with 28 assists.
