WEEK IN REVIEW
The Bruins posted a pair of wins last week, outscoring their opponents 8-3 on aggregate. UCLA opened the week with a comfortable 3-1 triumph over UC Riverside on Tuesday, then overwhelmed San Diego State 5-2 on Sunday on the strength of a historic five-goal performance from Milan Iloski. The Bruins scored early against the Highlanders and never let up, going ahead 3-0 and nearly recording a shutout before UCR got on the board at the 89:00 mark. Riley Ferch opened the scoring in the fourth minute with his first career goal as part of a three-point day. Constantinos Michaelides and Iloski netted in the first five minutes of the second half to put the game on ice. Iloski dominated start to finish against the Aztecs, potting a pair of goals in the first half and then grabbing three scores over a 12-minute span in the second half. Ferch (2), Eric Iloski, Matt Powell, and Marcony Pimentel all earned assists in the 5-2 win.
EARLY STARTERS
Early goals have been a common occurence in UCLA games so far this season. A goal has been scored by either UCLA or the opponent within the opening seven minutes in six of UCLA's 10 games this year (60%). The Bruins are 3-3 in those contests.
TOUGH ROAD
Entering the week, UCLA has played the sixth-toughest schedule of any team in the country. The Bruins' past opponents have combined for a .608 winning percentage. Stanford (.635) and Cal (.615) are the only two West Coast teams above UCLA.
ILOSKI MAKES HISTORY AGAINST SDSU
Milan Iloski made school history on Oct. 6 in a contest against San Diego State, scoring a program-record five goals in a 5-2 win for UCLA.
AWARDS APLENTY FOR ILOSKI
Following his five-goal outburst against SDSU, Iloski picked up a slew of awards. He was named the TopDrawerSoccer National Player of the Week, a member of the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week, the Pac-12 Player of the Week, and the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week. It was his second time winning each of those awards this season, as he was honored after posting a hat trick against defending national champion Maryland on Sept. 6.
HOT AT HOME
The Bruins have been traditionally tough to beat on their home field. Dating back to 2010, UCLA is 66-24-9 (.712) in home games, and has recorded a winning record at home in every season. UCLA is 9-5-1 (.633) at home since moving to Wallis Annenberg Stadium before the 2018 season.
ILOSKI TAKES OVER NATIONAL SCORING LEAD
Thanks to a five-game scoring streak out of the gate and a five-goal performance against SDSU, UCLA junior forward Milan Iloski has now taken over the national lead in a number of categories.
LAST YEAR AGAINST THE CARDINAL
The Bruins dropped both ends of the season series with Stanford last year, falling 3-0 in Palo Alto and losing a narrow 1-0 decision at home. The Cardinal broke through for three goals in the second half on their home turf. UCLA out-shot the Cardinal 21-10 in the Nov. 4, 2018 game at Annenberg Stadium, but couldn't find the back of the net. UCLA had a goal-bound shot cleared off the line and hit the woodwork three times in the 1-0 loss.
THE SERIES AGAINST STANFORD
The Bruins are 44-13-10 all-time against Stanford, but have dropped six consecutive contests against the Cardinal. UCLA's winless streak dates back to 2013, when UCLA was able to pull off a 2-1 victory in Palo Alto. The last time UCLA defeated Stanford at home was also in 2013.
LAST YEAR AGAINST CAL
The Bruins swept the season series with Cal last year, defeating the Golden Bears 2-1 on the road before blanking them 1-0 at home. UCLA led for most of the game in Berkeley, as Brandon Terwege scored at the 17:00 mark. Milan Iloski scored the game-winner in the 67th minute, neutralizing a Cal equalizer that was scored four minutes prior. At home, Santi Herrera found the back of the net in the 87th minute to rescue the full three points for UCLA, which had the majority of possession.
THE SERIES AGAINST CAL
UCLA is 45-18-6 all-time against Cal, and is coming off a season sweep of the Golden Bears. The Bruins are 5-5-1 against Cal at home dating back to the 2009 season.
ILOSKI TO ILOSKI
Junior midfielder Eric Iloski has earned the primary assist on three of his brother's goals this year - his opening goals against Maryland and CSUN as well as his third goal against SDSU. The brothers have now recorded a point on the same goal on four occasions - Milan and elder brother Brian assisted on an Eric goal against San Diego State on Oct. 15, 2017.
SETTING IT UP
Entering the week, the Bruins have four players with three or more assists on the year. Riley Ferch has a team-high five, while Matt Powell has a career-high four. Cody Sundquist and Eric Iloski each have three. Stanford is the only other Pac-12 program that has four players with 3+ assists. Overall, UCLA ranks second in the league and 20th nationwide with 21 assists.
UCLA100
UCLA will celebrate its first 100 years with a year-long university-wide Centennial Celebration. UCLA Athletics has several Centennial Celebration plans and giveaways in store for designated home events, including a set of 13 Centennial Pins highlighting each sport, as well as a souvenir mosaic poster that features personal photos submitted by UCLA fans. Men's soccer held its Centennial game on Sept. 26 against UC Irvine.
