Bruins Drop Contest to Colorado

LOS ANGELES - Junior Mac May led all players with 20 kills, but the 23rd-ranked Bruins fell in three sets to Colorado on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-21, 28-26, 25-22.
Senior Savvy Simo had 15 digs and seven kills, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych registered seven kills, redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith posted five blocks, sophomore Devon Chang had 19 assists and six digs and senior Cali Thompson recorded 14 assists and seven digs. The Bruins (13-9, 8-5 Pac-12) hit .188 for the match.
Despite four ties, the Bruins never led in the opening set. Colorado (11-12, 3-10 Pac-12) led by as much as six at 17-11 before the Bruins scored six in a row on three May kills, one from Hadrych and two Smith solo stuffs to even things at 17. However, the Buffaloes scored eight of the last 12 of the opener to win it 25-21. May posted eight kills, Hadrych added four and Simo notched three with seven digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .324 to .225.
Set two, which featured 16 ties and six lead changes, went to extra points. Down 7-2, the Bruins scored seven of nine to even things at nine, as May had three kills, Simo and Smith both tallied one and Colorado made a couple of errors. The largest lead of the set for UCLA was just one on several occasions. Colorado earned set points at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25, but the three attempts were saved on one kill by Simo and a pair from Hadrych. Even at 26, the Buffaloes scored the next two to win the second, 28-26. May recorded seven kills, Simo had five digs and Thompson posted three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .448 to .237.
The Bruins raced out to a 5-1 lead in set three thanks to a Simo kill, a Smith/May block, a CU attack error, a Smith/Hadrych roof and a May kill. Four would be UCLA's biggest advantage of the set. The Bruins still led by three at 19-16, but would only score three points for the rest of the match, as Colorado won the third, 25-22. May recorded five kills, as the Bruins were out-hit, .162 to .088.
The Bruins return to the court on Saturday at the John Wooden Center against No. 16 Utah at 5 p.m.ย
