Burke’s Career Day Lifts UCLA Past No. 17 Utah, 100-90
February 10, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SALT LAKE CITY – Senior Kennedy Burke erupted for a career-high 26 points and became the 22nd player in program history with 500 career field goals, as the UCLA women's basketball team upset No. 17 Utah, 100-90, on Sunday afternoon at the John M. Huntsman Center.
Burke, who made a career-high 11 field goals, came up big in the final 20 minutes, scoring 14 points in the second half.
UCLA shot 56.1 percent (37-for-66) from the field – the second-best shooting tally of the 2018-19 campaign – and reached the century mark for the first time this season. The Bruins also made school history, exploding for 40 points in the fourth quarter alone – the highest point tally ever in a single quarter.
Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere eclipsed the 25-point mark for the seventh time this season, shooting 11-for-21 to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
In a team-high 35 minutes, senior guard Japreece Dean registered 24 points to go along with seven rebounds and a team-high five assists. Dean, who saw her school-record free throw streak end at 40 on Friday at Colorado, shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
With the win, UCLA has sole possession of fourth place in the Pac-12, which boasts the second-best conference RPI in the NCAA.
The Storyline
UCLA (15-9, 8-4) got off to a hot start, racing to a 12-6 lead after a layup by Burke. The Utes, however, fired back with seven unanswered points to take a 13-12 edge. Burke buried a jumper on the run to put UCLA up one (16-15), but Utah (18-5, 7-5) again had the answer, mustering a 6-0 run to go up five.
UCLA trailed 23-20 entering the second quarter but continued to stick around, not letting Utah get ahead by more than seven points, as Onyenwere scored inside to pull the Bruins within five (29-24).
Back-to-back baskets by Burke cut the deficit to two (30-28), putting the senior into double figures with 10 points.
The Bruins continued to battle, getting a pull-up jumper by Dean and then another athletic move and layup by Burke to stay within two at the break.
UCLA shot 53.1 percent (17-for-32) in the first half and had just three turnovers while forcing seven Utah miscues.
With 6:42 left in the third quarter, Burke scored with the left hand to become the 22nd player in program history with 500 career field goals.
Burke continued to attack, netting a 3-pointer and then scoring on a baseline drive to keep UCLA within two (52-50) midway through the third.
In the final moments of the quarter, Onyenwere notched a put-back to put UCLA up one, and then Dean connected on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer on the left wing to extend the Bruin lead to four (60-56).
The Bruins scored the first six points of the fourth, giving UCLA a double-digit lead (66-56) before Utah responded with a corner trey to keep it a single-digit game.
In the fourth, the Bruins erupted for a 12-2 run to go up 17 and pull away, as Corsaro connected on the wing to make it 85-68 UCLA with 4:26 remaining.
After Utah scored four straight to pull within 13 (85-72), Burke nailed a 17-footer to notch a career high for points.
A 7-0 Utes run in a 17-second span cut the Bruins' lead to just nine (94-85), but UCLA went 6-for-8 from the line down the stretch to remain perfect (4-0) in the month of February.
