Bruins Close Weekend With Wins Against UCR and LMU
February 17, 2019 | Softball
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked Bruins shattered a school record for most runs in one inning in a 17-3, five-inning victory over UC Riverside, while closing the weekend with a 3-1 win against Loyola Marymount on Sunday at Easton Stadium.
Versus UCR (3-7), UCLA (8-0) scored 16 runs in the bottom of the first inning, including 13 before making an out. The 16-run outburst broke the previous school record of 13 runs scored on April 21, 1992 against Cal Poly Pomona. As far as national rankings go, the 16 runs are tied for the 11th-most runs in one inning. The 16 first-inning runs are tied for the second-most, first-inning runs ever.
UCLA had 15 hits from nine different players, as sophomore Briana Perez posted three hits and junior Bubba Nickles, redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan, sophomore Kinsley Washington and freshman Kelli Godin each recorded two hits. In the circle, sophomore Holly Azevedo (3-0) struck out six in five innings, allowing three runs, three hits and one walk. She fanned the side in order in the first, adding another 1-2-3 frame in the third and a pair of strikeouts in the fourth.
The Bruins sent 20 batters to the plate in their opening at-bat, as it started with a single and a stolen base by Perez and a two-run homer from Nickles. Jordan made it back-to-back homers to extend the lead to 3-0. Following walks to redshirt junior Rachel Garcia and senior Taylor Pack, a single from senior Brianna Tautalafua loaded the bases and a free pass to senior Paige Halstead brought home Garcia to make it 4-0. Washington drove in Pack and Tautalafua on a single to bring the advantage to 6-0, while Godin plated senior Danae Blodgett, who was running for Halstead, to make it 7-0.
Perez's second single of the first inning, this time a bunt hit, drove in Washington. After a walk to Nickles, Jordan drove in Godin and Perez on a single to make it 10-0. Garcia extended the lead to 13-0 with a three-run homer to left-center. Later in the inning, with two outs and Halstead and Washington on base, Godin singled up the middle to score both to make it 15-0. A Perez double, her third hit of the first inning, plated Godin to bring the lead to 16-0.
UC Riverside got on the board in the second inning on a solo homer by Emma Ramelot, adding two runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Melanie Olmos.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nickles homered to center, her second of the game, to make it 17-3.
Game two against Loyola Marymount (6-2) was much more of a pitcher's duel, with Garcia prevailing with her fourth win of the season. She struck out 14 in a complete-game four-hitter, giving up just one run with no walks. She struck out the side in the third, fifth and sixth innings and two each in the second and seventh. Garcia's 1-2-3 innings came in the second, fourth and fifth. The Bruins (9-0) had seven hits from six players, as Perez posted two more hits.
For just the second time this season, the Bruins fell behind after a third-inning solo homer by Riley Ehlen. But like the only other time they trailed (first inning against Georgia State), UCLA evened the score in its next at-bat. With two outs and Tautalafua at first after reaching on a fielder's choice, she moved to second on a Perez single to right and scored on a Nickles single up the middle to even the score at one.
In the fifth, the Bruins took the lead for good. Godin led off with a single to left, stole second and moved to third on a grounder to the right side by freshman Anna Vines. After Perez reached base on a bunt hit, extending it to a double after nobody was covering the bag, one out later Jordan singled to the 5-6 hole to bring in both runners to make it 3-1.
The Bruins head to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic next weekend in Cathedral City, Calif. The six-game, four-day tournament for UCLA begins on Thursday at 8 p.m. versus No. 19 Texas A&M.
