PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - On a rainy day at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, the 12th-ranked Bruins lead the way after 18 holes at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, topping the field by four strokes after Sunday's play.
UCLA shot a 7-over 291 and leads Stanford by four.
Senior Beth Wu and junior Clare Legaspi are two of seven players to shoot even par or better on the opening day of the tournament. Both Bruins shot even-par 71s and are two back of the individual lead held by Wake Forest's Letizia Bagnoli and Texas' Agathe Laisne (-2). Legaspi, starting on the 12th hole, made a pair of birdies on No. 16 and 4 and two bogeys. Wu, opening on the 11th hole, made three birdies in her first five holes (No. 12, 15 and 16), adding one more on her final hole (No. 10), to go with two bogeys and a double.
Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit is tied for 11th following a 2-over 73. She made her lone birdie on No. 15 and three bogeys. Junior Mariel Galdiano (+5, 76) is tied for 30th, recording a pair of birdies on No. 5 and 7, three bogeys and a quad. Sophomore Vera Markevich (84th, +14, 85) made her only birdie on the 12th to go with nine bogeys and three doubles. Freshman Phoebe Yue, playing as an individual, tallied two birdies (No. 16 and 8), five bogeys and four doubles en route to an 11-over 82 (81st).
Monday's second round will be another shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the order of Wu (No. 1), Legaspi (No. 2), Tavatanakit (No. 3), Galdiano (No. 4) and Markevich (No. 5), with Yue opening on the ninth hole.
