PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - Facing another day of tough conditions at the Palos Verdes Golf Club on Monday, the 12th-ranked Bruins tied for the fourth-best round of the second day of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. UCLA shot a 5-over 289, two strokes better than its score on Sunday, and is at 12-over 580 after 36 holes, six back of Stanford (+6, 574).
Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit was the lone Bruin to finish under par on Monday, shooting a 1-under 70. She made a pair of birdies on the fifth and seventh holes and just one bogey on No. 10. Overall, Tavatanakit is tied for second at 1-over 143, three shots behind Stanford's Andrea Lee (-2, 140).
Senior Beth Wu and junior Clare Legaspi are also inside the Top 10 after each shot 3-over 74s. The duo are tied for ninth through 36 holes at 3-over 145. Legaspi had three birdies on the sixth and eighth holes, as well as her final hole of the day, the first. She also made four bogeys and a double. Wu posted back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to go with three bogeys and a double. Junior Mariel Galdiano is tied for 17th (+5, 147) following an even-par 71. She was five strokes better than her previous round, making birdies on her opening hole, No. 4, as well as No. 16 and 18, adding three bogeys. Freshman Phoebe Yue, playing as an individual, is tied for 71st (+16, 158), improving six strokes from Sunday following a 5-over 76. She made four birdies on No. 14, 17, 6 and 8 and nine bogeys. Sophomore Vera Markevich sits in 83rd (+22, 164), shooting an 8-over 79. She made a birdie on her final hole, the fourth, to go with three bogeys and three doubles.
The Bruins will have another shotgun start for their final round on Tuesday. Play starts at 8:30 a.m. in the order of Tavatanakit (No. 1), Wu (No. 2), Legaspi (No. 3), Galdiano (No. 4) and Markevich (No. 5). Yue starts on the 18th hole.
