No. 1 Bruins Close Trip to Hawaii With Two Mercy-Rule Wins

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Bruin bats produced 22 runs and 25 hits on Saturday, as No. 1 UCLA picked up a pair of mercy-rule wins against Georgia State (9-1 in six innings) and Saint Mary's (13-1 in five innings).
In game one against the Panthers (0-5), the Bruins (4-0) had 12 hits from seven different players, as sophomore Briana Perez posted three hits, three runs and two RBI, senior Paige Halstead added two hits and three RBI, senior Taylor Pack had two hits and freshman Kelli Godin notched two hits and two runs. In the circle, sophomore Holly Azevedo struck out three in four innings, giving up a run, three hits and one walk. Freshman Megan Faraimo pitched the last two frames and retired all six batters via the strikeout, allowing only one hit.
The Bruins trailed for the first time this season, as Georgia State scored the game's first run on an RBI single by Kalynn Hicks in the top of the first. UCLA bounced back with a run in the bottom of the frame, as Perez led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored two outs later on a Pack RBI single.
UCLA tacked on three more in the second. After sophomore Kinsley Washington reached on a one-out error and Godin got on via a bunt single, Perez doubled to right-center to score both to make it 3-1. Perez then moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a sacrifice fly from junior Bubba Nickles to bring the lead to 4-1.
In the fourth, the Bruins scored four times. Godin, Perez and Nickles strung singles together to bring in UCLA's fifth run. A sacrifice fly by junior Jacqui Prober plated Perez to make it 6-1, while a two-run homer from Halstead, her first of the season, brought the advantage to 8-1.
Halstead ended things two innings later with an RBI double to right to score Prober, who had a one-out single, to give the Bruins the 9-1 win.
In game two against the Gaels (1-4), UCLA (5-0) had 13 hits from 10 different players. Nickles went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and four runs scored, senior Zoe Shaw added two hits and Pack posted two hits and two RBI. Redshirt junior Rachel Garcia struck out three in four innings, allowing a run, a hit and a walk. Azevedo tossed the last frame, striking out two in a 1-2-3 fifth.
The Bruins scored in their first at-bat in the top of the first, as Nickles drew a one-out walk and redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan belted a two-run homer to center, her second of the weekend. In the third, Nickles hit her second homer of the weekend to lead off the inning to make it 3-0.
UCLA added three in the fourth, as Perez drove in Godin on an RBI single and Pack plated Perez and Nickles on a double.

A Garcia sacrifice fly plated Nickles to make it 12-1, while a Washington double scored Tautalafua to bring the lead to 13-1.
The Bruins return home to host the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, which starts on Friday at Easton Stadium. UCLA's first two games will be against Cal Poly (4:30 p.m.) and Boise State (7 p.m.) on Feb. 15.
