LOS ANGELES โ The No. 11 UCLA women's tennis team dropped a heart-breaking 4-3 decision against No. 7 Stanford Friday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins (11-4, 3-1) tallied the first three points of the day behind a determined doubles effort and singles victories by Abi Altick and Jada Hart. The Cardinal (13-1, 4-0) claimed the final four decisions, however, capped by a three-set triumph by Emily Arbuthnott on Court 4.
With each doubles team ranked in the top 45 nationally, the quest for the day's first point fittingly came down to an all-or-nothing decision on the top court. In order to get there, Bruin and Cardinal teams on Courts 2 and 3 stepped up for big-time performances.
The Stanford duo of Melissa Lord and Niluka Madurawe, ranked 41st, dispatched of No. No. 45 Abi Altick and Alaina Miller on Court 3 to get things started. Lord-Madurawe rode a couple early big breaks of serve to a 6-1 victory.
Moments later, the 22nd-ranked pair of Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart turned in a 6-1 victory of its own to pull the Bruins even. The win over No. 18 Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon marked Bolton-Hart's first against a top-20 opponent since defeating the same duo at November's Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
No. 12 Caroline Lampl-Kimberly Yee of Stanford picked up a big break for a 2-1 lead on the top court. No. 11 Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield answered in a big way, however, taking the next four games en route to a 6-3 victory, the pair's fourth win against a ranked opponent and, most importantly, the doubles point.

The Cardinal looked poised to come back in singles play, taking four of six first sets. Altick quickly quelled some of that momentum, however, posting a dominant 6-1, 6-1 performance versus No. 57 Janice Shin on Court 5. The win marked Altick's fifth straight in finished matches.

Stanford pulled even with near-simultaneous victories on Courts 2 and 3. First off was No. 58 Lampl, who dealt Broomfield a 6-2, 6-2 loss. No. 18 Bolton picked up the first three games against No. 47 Lord on the next court over, but the Cardinal senior powered back for a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
In a chain reaction up the top courts, No. 56 Hart gave the lead back to the Bruins with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against No. 28 Gordon on the top court. The win marked Hart's seventh in her last eight matches, with Gordon representing the highest-slotted of three ranked opponents faced during that stretch.

UCLA's Taylor Johnson fought hard in her first Stanford match, bouncing back from a big early deficit to push 81st-ranked Emma Higuchi on Court 6. Higuchi proved too much, though, taking that set by a 6-4 score and eventually besting Johnson in a second-set tiebreaker 9-7.
After dropping the first set against 17th-ranked Arbuthnott, Miller returned the favor in the second. In the deciding frame, Miller led 2-1 and earned a big break to make it 3-3. The Cardinal junior then took charge, however, taking the final three games and the win.
The Bruins will have a shot at another top 15 opponent Saturday, when No. 15 California visits LATC. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
