No. 11 Women's Tennis Drops No. 15 Cal 6-1

March 30, 2019 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 11 UCLA women's tennis team notched a convincing conference win Saturday afternoon, as it defeated No. 15 California 6-1 at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Abi Altick clinched her team-high fourth match of the season and second against the Golden Bears. The Bruins (12-4, 4-1) came out with a fury in doubles play and continued to roll throughout singles action. Elysia Bolton, Alaina Miller, Ayan Broomfield and Jada Hart also picked up singles wins, while Alexis Nelson turned in the lone victory for Cal (9-5, 3-2).

The Bruins received little challenge in doubles play, with the top-15 Court 1 matchup the only one in question. They raced out to 5-0 leads on Courts 2 and 3, putting them well on their way to the day's first point.

The 45th-ranked UCLA pair of Altick and Miller finished first, relinquishing just one game to Olivia Hauger and Katerina Stloukalova on Court 3. The win improved Altick-Miller's overall record to 8-3.

With No. 11 Broomfield and Gabby Andrews leading Cal's 13th-ranked team of Hana Mraz and Julia Rosenqvist by a 4-2 score up top, the point would be decided on the middle court. Like their Court 3 teammates, 22nd-ranked Bolton and Hart would surrender just one game to No. 23 Anna Bright and Jasie Dunk. The win avenged a 6-2 loss to the same team in February.

The Bruins would go on to secure five of six first sets. No. 18 Bolton's 6-1 first set on Court 2 was followed by a 6-2 for her team-high 19th win of the year. In defeating 74th-ranked Bright, the freshman has now dispatched of eight nationally-ranked opponents against five losses.

Miller followed suit on Court 4, where she handed Cal's Maria Smith a 6-2, 6-3 loss. The Bruin dropped the first two games of the match before flipping the switch en route to victory. The win marked Miller's 10th of the dual-match season, making her the first UCLA player into double digits.

Altick recorded her sixth-straight win in finished matches, beating Mraz by a 6-4, 6-3 margin on Court 5 to clinch the match. Now 8-1 on the season, the sophomore tallied a straight-set win in each of UCLA's weekend matches. Altick previously defeated Bright in three sets to clinch the Bruins' win at Cal in February.

Shortly after Altick's triumph, Broomfield completed a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Stloukalova on Court 3. The win marked the senior's second of Pac-12 play.

Nelson defeated UCLA's Taylor Johnson in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 marathon on Court 6. While that match was played in full, the top-court showdown between No. 56 Hart and No. 30 Rosenqvist went to a 10-point, third-set tiebreaker.

Hart completed a 6-0 week across singles and doubles action, willing her way to a 10-8 victory over 30th-ranked Rosenqvist in the deciding frame. The Bruin previously dropped a second-set tiebreaker to reach that point. She has now won eight of her last nine matches and picked up wins over a pair of top-30 opponents on the weekend. She also teamed with Bolton to dominate a pair of top-25 doubles teams.

The Bruins will ring in the month of April with their final home matches of the season. Pepperdine visits Wednesday, April 3 at 1:30 p.m. to begin the busy week. On Friday, April 5, they will welcome Utah for a 12 p.m. start. Finally, UCLA will honor seniors Andrews, Broomfield and Miller during a Saturday, April 6 match against Colorado. That one is set for a 1:30 p.m. first serve.
