March 04, 2019 | Women's Rowing
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's rowing team will open its spring season against San Diego State in Marina del Rey, Calif., this Saturday morning.
The two schools will compete in four races which are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Ballona Creek.
UCLA will race its third and fourth varsity eight crews against San Diego State's third varsity eight at 9:30 a.m. Both schools will race their varsity four crews at 9:45 a.m., with the second varsity eight race set for 10 a.m. The morning will conclude with the varsity eight race at 10:15 a.m.
Saturday's event will mark the first of two consecutive home dual meets to open the season for UCLA. The Bruins will also face Loyola Marymount at Marina del Rey on Saturday, March 16.
"We're excited to get our season underway," Bruins' head coach Amy Fuller Kearney said. "In these first few races, we're trying to lay the groundwork for our team's race strategy. We're seeing what we would like to do, we're breaking down each stroke, and we're looking for some common themes for every 500 meters. With our first two home races, we'll see where our strengths and weaknesses are, and we can get some feedback on where we'll need to improve as our season continues."
UCLA's home races are free to the public and parking is available along Fiji Way, approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the team's boathouse. On the north side of the boathouse, the marina serves as a practice site and racing venue for the Bruins' regattas. Along the south side, Ballona Creek serves as the Bruins' 2000-meter race course.
The address to UCLA's boathouse is 14001 Fiji Way (located in Marina del Rey). From the 405 freeway, take the 90 West until it turns into a surface street and intersects at Mindanao. Turn left to Mindanao and continue to Lincoln Blvd. Take a left at Lincoln Blvd before turning right onto Fiji Way.
Parking on race days is restricted to either the Fisherman's Village and Dock 52. Fisherman's Village is a five-minute walk, while Dock 52 is a 10-15 minute walk from the boathouse.
