One week before the start of Pac-12 Conference play, the second-ranked Bruins will stay local this weekend, co-hosting the UCLA/Long Beach State Invitational. UCLA will entertain Robert Morris on Friday at 7 p.m. and BYU (3 p.m.) and Liberty (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday at Easton Stadium. On Sunday, the Bruins will travel to the LBSU Softball Complex, taking on Boston U. at 11:30 a.m. and Long Beach State at 2 p.m. Free live audio will be available for all games at UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins head north to Seattle next weekend to open Pac-12 play, facing sixth-ranked Washington in a three-game series which starts on Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. The weekend continues on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. and concludes on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. The March 15 contest will have a free video stream courtesy of Washington, while the March 16 and 17 games will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
Once again, the Bruins check in at second in all three national polls (NFCA/USA Softball/Softball America) this week. UCLA was selected first in the preseason Pac-12 Conference coaches poll.
BRUINS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Through the first month of the season, the Bruins' pitching staff is second in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.81) and third in earned run average (1.10). Offensively, UCLA is 10th in batting average (.347) and runs per game (7.17), 16th in slugging (.533), 24th in fielding percentage (.976), tied for 25th in doubles (31) and 30th in on base percentage (.409). On an individual level, redshirt junior Rachel Garcia is fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.71), seventh in ERA (0.58), eighth in hits allowed per seven innings (3.02), tied for 10th in saves (2), tied for 12th in shutouts (3) and tied for 31st in wins (7). Sophomore Briana Perez is tied for seventh in runs scored (24), tied for 10th in hits (29) and tied for 23rd in doubles (7), junior Bubba Nickles is tied for 19th in runs (21), tied for 21st in home runs (6) and tied for 28th in runs batted in (22) and freshman Megan Faraimo is 17th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.83) and 23rd in hits allowed per seven (3.64).
NEWS AND NOTES
Freshman Megan Faraimo tossed her second no-hitter on Feb. 24 against Colorado State. Along with it being the 111th in UCLA history, it marked the first time a Bruin had two no-hitters in the same season since 2015 (Ally Carda) and the first UCLA freshman to do so since 2005 (Anjelica Selden) ... junior Bubba Nickles compiled a 24-game hitting streak before it came to an end versus Colorado State. During the streak, she hit .466 (34-for-73) with 10 home runs, 30 runs batted in and 27 runs scored. Only three UCLA hitting streaks were higher than Nickles' (Natasha Watley, 32 in 2001 and 29 in 2002, and Stacey Nuveman, 28 in 1997). Nickles has hits in 16 of 18 games this season, including six multiple-hit contests. She has also driven in runs in 13 games and scored in 12 contests ... in five of her six starts, redshirt junior Rachel Garcia has double figures in strikeouts, producing 15-strikeout contests against Hawaii (Feb. 8) and Oklahoma (Feb. 22), 14 versus Loyola Marymount (Feb. 17), 13 against Ole Miss (Feb. 16) and 10 versus Florida (March 1). She has RBI in nine of 17 games, including multiple RBI on five occasions ... sophomore Briana Perez has hits in 15 of 18 games and has reached base in 39 of 41 contests dating back to last season. Perez has 11 multiple-hit games, tying a career high with three versus Florida on Feb. 27. She has also scored at least one run in 16 of 18 contests ... sophomore Kinsley Washington has hits in nine in a row and in 14 of her 17 starts. She is hitting .417 (10-for-24) during her current streak with nine runs scored ... sophomore Holly Azevedo is 6-0 on the season, bringing her career record to 21-0. She set a new career high with eight strikeouts against Florida on Feb. 27 and has a 0.84 earned run average in her last 16 2/3 innings ... senior Brianna Tautalafua drove in the mercy-rule runs twice at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, driving in four, including the final two on a single, against Missouri, and the last two on a two-run bomb versus Kentucky ... senior Taylor Pack had hits in six in a row from Feb. 22-March 1, driving in runs in four of those contests ... freshman Kelli Godin stole three bases against Saint Mary's on Feb. 9. It is the first time a Bruin has swiped three bags in one game since 2014 (Allexis Bennett). She has hits in 10 of her 14 starts.
BRUINS VERSUS THIS WEEKEND'S OPPONENTS
The Bruins are 3-0 all-time against Robert Morris. The two teams met on consecutive days in February 2014 at Easton Stadium, with UCLA winning 3-2 in eight innings and 9-0 in five innings ... the Bruins are 6-1 versus BYU, having won three in a row.
