LOS ANGELES - Two big swings in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run homer by redshirt junior Rachel Garcia and a grand slam by Malia Quarles helped the top-ranked Bruins win their weekend series against Oregon, as UCLA recorded an 8-1 victory on Sunday at Easton Stadium.
Garcia also picked up the win in relief to move to 17-0 on the season. She struck out four in three innings, allowing an unearned run, three hits and one walk. She struck out two in the sixth. Sophomore Holly Azevedo both started and finished the game, striking out five in four innings and giving up just one hit. She had 1-2-3 frames in the second, third and seventh, striking out a pair in the third.
The Bruins (37-2, 11-1 Pac-12) had eight hits from six different players, as junior Bubba Nickles went 3-for-4.
UCLA drew first blood in the third inning, as freshman Kelli Godin reached on a leadoff error, stole second, advanced to third on another Oregon miscue and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore Briana Perez.
Oregon (17-21, 2-10 Pac-12) evened the game in the fifth with a run, but the Bruins answered with seven in the sixth. Nickles and senior Taylor Pack led off with singles and came home on Garcia's bomb to left field, her seventh homer of the season, to make it 4-1. UCLA then loaded the bases on a walk to redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan, a single to senior Paige Halstead and a hit by pitch of freshman Colleen Sullivan, which brought up Quarles, who launched a shot over the video board in left field, her second homer of the season, to increase the lead to 8-1.
The Bruins are on the road next weekend for a Thursday-Saturday series at Oregon State. The series begins on Thursday at 5 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.
