UCLA Cross Country Teams Ranked, Begin Competition on Saturday

LOS ANGELES โ The nationally-ranked UCLA cross country teams will race on Saturday, Aug. 31 against UC Riverside in a dual meet at Shady Rest Campground in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. The meet will kick off the 2019 season under third-year Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Avery Anderson.
UCLA returns almost its entire roster from a year ago, including three All-West Region selections in Erika Adler, Christina Rice and Colin Burke. Robert Brandt, who redshirted in 2018 but when on to become the 2019 Pac-12 track & field 10K champion, is back for his senior season in Westwood. He was UCLA's top runner at the 2017 NCAA Championships, as he finished 88th overall with a 10K time of 30:34.36.
Along with Anderson, the Bruins are coached by assistants Devin Elizondo and Austin O'Neil, as well as volunteer assistant Rob Beamer.

MEET INFORMATION
The women's 4000m race is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. (PT), followed by the men's race at 10 a.m. Both parking and admission are free, and the start and finish line will be located near the soccer field at the campground. Results will be found at www.tfrrs.org.

GETTING LOVE IN THE POLLS
Both the UCLA men and women earned spots in the top 25 of the NCAA Division I Preseason National Coaches' Poll. With 98 points, the Bruin women found themselves at No. 21 in the country, as well as No. 5 in the West Region. On the men's side, UCLA garnered 87 points to sit 22nd overall and No. 5 in the West. The next NCAA poll will be released on Sept. 17.

In 2019-20, UCLA will celebrate its first 100 years with a year-long university-wide Centennial Celebration. UCLA Athletics has several Centennial Celebration plans and giveaways in store for designated home events, including a set of 13 Centennial Pins highlighting each sport, as well as a souvenir mosaic poster that features personal photos submitted by UCLA fans.

FLASHBACK TO 2018
The 2018 campaign saw a young UCLA cross country team muster top-seven team finishes at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, Calif. The women placed seventh, led by Erika Adler's 14th-place finish (19:56.5). Adler was followed by Christina Rice, who came in 23rd at 20:20.65. On the men's side, it was all Colin Burke, who clocked a time of 29:49.17 to finish 11th, helping the men take sixth place. Garrett Reynolds came in 17 spots behind at 28th with a time of 30:06.71. Adler, Rice and Burke each earned All-West Region honors.
At the Pac-12 Championships, Adler once again led the women with a 13th-place finish (20:09.6), while Rice joined her in the top 25 (20:39.2). On the men's side, Burke paced the Bruins at 11th (23:15.7), followed by Reynolds (25th; 23:40.2). The men and women placed sixth and fifth, respectively.
Adler went on to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships in Wisconsin, where she ultimately finished the 6K race in 21:22.5 (136th).
UCLA started the season strong, as the Bruin men won the Fresno State Invitational, while the women earned second. The Bruins were also successful off the course, reaping nine Pac-12 All-Academic selections, led by Millen Trujillo's first team recognition.
