HONOLULU -ย Junior Mac May recorded a double-double for the second night in a row on 18 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Devon Chang added her first of the year with 21 assists and 11 digs, as the Bruins made it five wins in a row with a sweep of West Virginia on Friday at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-9, 25-18, 27-25.
ย
The Bruins (5-2) hit .344 and served a season-best eight aces, with May, Chang, senior Savvy Simo and sophomore Hawley Harrer all providing a pair. Simo had 10 digs and seven kills, sophomore Kelli Barry recorded 15 digs, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych had nine kills and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan notched seven kills and no errors in nine attempts for a .778 hitting percentage.
ย
The first set was even at four when the Bruins scored five in a row on kills by Ryan and Simo, a block by Ryan and junior Jenny Mosser, a May ace and a West Virginia (4-4) attack error. With the margin still four at 11-7, UCLA netted nine straight, as May connected on six kills, Hadrych had one, Simo served an ace and the Mountaineers made an error. After a sideout, Hadrych and May kills and two West Virginia errors gave the Bruins 16 set points, as a Ryan kill closed out a 25-9 victory. May had 10 kills and just one error in 16 attempts (.562), Chang and Simo added six digs and Barry posted four digs in the opening set. The Bruins hit .452 and held the Mountaineers to a -.029 percentage.
ย
There were seven ties and four lead changes in set two before the Bruins pulled away. Even at 10, a May kill, a Harrer ace and a West Virginia attack error put UCLA up by three. Still up by that margin at 16-13, a block by Mosser and redshirt freshman Tristin Savage, a Simo/Savage roof and back-to-back Chang aces put UCLA up by a set-best seven. Following kills by Mosser and May, the Bruins won the set by a score of 25-18. Hadrych had five kills in the second, May added four kills and six digs, Barry posted six digs and Simo notched four. The Bruins out-hit the Mountaineers, .265 to .128.
ย
While the Bruins never trailed in set three, they were forced to play into extra time, but finished off the sweep. UCLA scored the first five points on two Harrer kills, a May kill, a Simo ace and a West Virginia error. The largest lead for the Bruins was six, as a service error, a Simo kill and a block by Simo and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith made it 13-7. West Virginia stayed in it, and at 24-22, saved two match points. A service error gave the Bruins a third match point, but the Mountaineers again stayed alive. UCLA would go back to May though to record the final two kills of the match to win it 27-25. May had four kills and three digs in the third, Ryan added four kills, Simo posted three kills and Barry had five digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .344 to .323.
