Bruin Offense Breaks Out in 4-2 Win at CSUN
September 15, 2019 | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The UCLA men's soccer team gave the No. 2 offense in the country a taste of its own medicine on Sunday night, as the Bruins scored a season-high four goals to down CSUN 4-2 at Matador Soccer Stadium in non-conference action.
Reigning national Player of the Week Milan Iloski led the way with five points (two goals, one assist) while sophomore midfielder Cody Sunquist and junior midfielder Eric Iloski provided key scores in the second half.
Milan Iloski scored the first two goals of the game for UCLA (3-2), putting the visitors up for good with his second tally at the 54:19 mark. Sundquist followed with his first goal of the year in the 64th minute, and that strike ended up as the game-winner.
Eric Iloski closed the scoring in the 84th minute, helping re-establish a two-goal lead for the Bruins after CSUN's Daniel Trejo picked up a brace at 72:40 to temporarily make it a 3-2 game.
The Bruins were on the ball for the majority of the night, ending the night with an 14-11 advantage in shots and a 62%-38% edge in possession.
"We're obviously very pleased with the result, there were parts where we really managed the game well," said UCLA head coach Ryan Jorden. "We still have to keep growing in our tactical savviness of being able to maintain and control the tempo of the game - and if somebody wants to try and make us uncomfortable - we have to know ways to manage those moments."
Iloski took advantage of a CSUN (4-1-1) miscue to open the game's scoring. With the ball bouncing towards the CSUN box, a Matador defender got low to try and head the ball away. However, the ball glanced off his head instead where Iloski was ready to take over possession with a scoring chance at hand. Milan used about five touches to blast past a couple CSUN defenders in his vicinity and then hammered a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
Trejo equalized for the home squad in the 29th minute, receiving a nice pass from Johnny Rodriguez in the box before slotting it past UCLA keeper Justin Garces. That was the last goal of the first half.
Iloski gave the Bruins the lead again in the 55th. After receiving a pass inside the box from teammate Riley Ferch, Iloski moved towards the left post, got the goalie to bite on a fake shot, and then finished into an open net.
It was the second multi-goal game in 10 days for Iloski, who has a league-high seven scores on the season.
Sundquist netted the game-winner in the 64th minute. Milan Iloski played him a ball down the right wing deep in the box, and the Granite Bay, Calif. native was able to convert on his sharp-angle shot to make it 3-1 UCLA.
Eric Iloski gave UCLA some breathing room with a goal in the final 10 minutes of the game, his first score since the 2017 campaign. The Escondido, Calif. native was able to solidly connect on a rebound chance off a Matthew Powell shot.
CSUN, who entered the game with a 3.60 goals-per-game average, was limited to a season-low two goals. The Matadors mustered just two shots on goal after Sundquist's game-winner, both of which were turned away by Garces.
Next up, the Bruins open Pac-12 Conference play on the road. UCLA is scheduled to travel to Oregon State on Thursday, Sept. 19 followed by a Sunday matchup at Washington. Both games will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
