Bruins Fall 2-0 at Oregon State
September 19, 2019 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 19 UCLA suffered a 2-0 shutout at the hands of Oregon State on Thursday night in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
It was the first shutout of the year for the Bruins (3-3-0, 0-1-0), who were coming off a four-goal performance in their last game.
Oregon State (4-3-0, 1-0-0) potted both of its goals before the halftime break, and then held off UCLA in the second half.
Junior midfielder Marcony Pimentel, redshirt senior midfielder Matt Powell, and junior forward Milan Iloski each had two shots in the contest, tying for the team lead.
Despite the scoreline, UCLA was on the ball for the majority of the first half. However, the possession advantage did not result in a Grade-A scoring chance.
Perhaps the Bruins' best chance came in the 75th minute, as a headed ball came to the feet of Powell deep in Beaver territory, but his point-blank shot was stopped by OSU keeper Adrian Fernandez.
Joel Walker scored the opening goal for the Beavers in just the third minute, cleaning up in the box after a cross bounced around inside the 18 before falling to his feet.
Sofianne Djeffal made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute after scoring directly from an in-swinging corner kick.
UCLA concludes its Pacific Northwest road trip with a Pac-12 showdown on Sunday at Washington. The contest, scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kick-off, will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
