WEEK IN REVIEW
UCLA had just one game last week, drawing 1-1 with UC Irvine on Thursday, Sept. 26. The Bruins unveiled their Centennial kits for the contest. Milan Iloski opened the scoring for UCLA with a 26th minute strike, but the lead was short-lived as UCI equalized in the 29th. Neither team was able to capitalize the rest of the way as UCLA recorded its first tie in nearly two years (Oct. 18, 2017).
TOUGH ROAD
Entering the week, UCLA can lay claim to the toughest schedule of any team in the country. The Bruins' scheduled opponents have combined for a .679 winning percentage - highest in the country - including a .657 mark by past opponents and a .696 clip by future opponents. Among West Coast teams, UC Irvine (.645, seventh) and St. Mary's (.645, eighth) are the only other teams within the top-15.
HOT START FOR MILAN ILOSKI
Thanks to a five-game scoring streak out of the gate, UCLA junior forward Milan Iloski has had a red-hot start to the 2019 campaign. That streak included a hat trick against Maryland and a five-point performance at CSUN. Some notes on his torrid start to the season:
UCLA and UC Riverside last met on Sept. 14, 2015 at Drake Stadium as the Highlanders took advantage of a UCLA own goal to claim a 2-1 overtime win. The triumph was the first-ever for UCR in 15 all-time matchups against the Bruins. Jose Hernandez scored his first career goal in that game against UC Riverside, putting the Bruins ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute. Though UCLA controlled most of the game, the Bruins weren't able to build on the early lead and paid the price as UCR's Ricardo Ruiz volleyed in a cross in the 71st minute to set up overtime. The game ended in the 96th minute as a UCLA clearance caromed off a UCR player and keeper Dakota Havlick's hands for an own goal.
THE SERIES AGAINST UCR
The Bruins are 14-0-1 all-time against UC Riverside, winning 14 straight before the 2015 matchup. The two teams have faced off just five times since 1984, with UCLA going 4-1 over that span.
HOT AT HOME
The Bruins have been traditionally tough to beat on their home field. Dating back to 2010, UCLA is 64-24-9 (.706) in home games, and has recorded a winning record at home in every season. UCLA is 7-5-1 (.577) at home since moving to Wallis Annenberg Stadium before the 2018 season.
ILOSKI TO ILOSKI
Junior midfielder Eric Iloski helped set up his brother Milan's opening goal against CSUN. That helper represented the second time this season that Eric earned the primary assist on a Milan goal. It was also the third time that Eric and Milan have both recorded a point on the same goal - Milan and elder brother Brian assisted on an Eric goal against San Diego State on Oct. 15, 2017.
POWELL TABBED TO PRESEASON ALL-PAC-12 TEAM
Redshirt senior midfielder/defender Matthew Powell was named to the 2019 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team ahead of the new season. Powell was one of just three defenders to make the conference's preseason Best XI. The Castro Valley, Calif. native was an All-Pac-12 second team choice in 2018 after receiving an all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore in 2017. A mainstay of the defensive corps last year, Powell was one of just three Bruins to start all 19 of the team's games. Spending time at both center back and holding mid, Powell played the full 90 in all but three games and ended the year with 1,670 minutes of action, third-most on the team.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, BRUINS
The Bruins will have 16 of 18 regular season games appear on TV this season, including all 10 home games. Pac-12 Networks will provide live television coverage of every regular season game at Annenberg Stadium in addition to four UCLA road games.
BRUINS IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
Former UCLA players Reggie Cannon and Jackson Yueill as well as current volunteer assistant coach Walker Zimmerman were all named to the 26-man roster for the U.S. Men's National Team in late August. Zimmerman and Cannon both started in the USMNT's battle against Mexico on Sept. 6, while Yueill appeared as a substitute. Then in the US's battle against Uruguay on Sept. 10, both Cannon and Yueill drew starts. Cannon has accrued eight caps with the senior team, including a start at right back in the 2019 Gold Cup final against Mexico. Yueill has three caps, all coming in 2019. Zimmerman, an LAFC defender, has scored twice over 11 career games with Team USA.
HOME COOKING
Starting on Sept. 26 against UC Irvine, UCLA will play a season-high eight consecutive games at home. That is the longest homestand for the program since at least 1980 (home-away designations are unavailable prior to 1980). Once that stretch begins, the Bruins don't play another road game until they head to Berkeley for a matchup against Cal on Halloween.
SUNDQUIST SETTING IT UP
Sophomore midfielder Cody Sundquist has had a nice start to the 2019 campaign, recording points in four of eight games to this point of the season for a total of five points (one goal, three assists). His three apples are a team-high and rank sixth in the Pac-12 Conference. The Granite Bay, Calif. native recorded his first goal of the season and second of his career against CSUN on Sept. 15, a tally which held up as the game-winner. Both of his career goals have been game-winners.
