LONG BEACH - Senior Savvy Simo posted the first double-double of her career with 13 kills and 14 digs and was joined on the Long Beach Mizuno Classic All-Tournament Team by Most Valuable Player junior Mac May, who added 14 kills and eight digs, as the Bruins swept their third-straight opponent with a victory over Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday. Set scores were 31-29, 27-25, 27-25.
Sophomore Kelli Barry, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, had 20 digs and seven assists. Sophomore Hawley Harrer added 21 assists, nine kills, eight digs and three blocks and sophomore Devon Chang posted 20 assists, nine digs and two aces, as the tandem set the Bruins (3-2) to a .297 hitting percentage. Junior Jenny Mosser had eight kills and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan added seven kills and three blocks.
The opening set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes, as UCLA saved three set points, while Long Beach State (2-4) saved four before eventually dropping the set. Fast forwarding to a tie at 18, kills by Simo and Harrer and an LBSU error put the Bruins up by three. After a 49er sideout, kills by Simo and May made it 23-19. Long Beach scored the next three, but a May kill gave the Bruins two set points, which were saved by the 49ers. After two more ties at 25 and 26, LBSU had two set points, but posted service errors both times. The Bruins saved a third set point on a Simo kill to even things at 29, which was followed by a May kill and an LBSU attack error to finish off the 31-29 win. Simo was error-free with five kills and no errors in nine attempts, while May also had five kills. Harrer added three kills, Chang had nine assists and six digs and Barry posted seven digs, as the Bruins out-hit the 49ers, .333 to .256.
It was another deuce set in the second, which featured nine ties and three lead changes. Down 19-15, the Bruins scored eight in a row to go ahead by four. Kills by Simo and May and an LBSU attack error got UCLA to within one, then Harrer and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith teamed up on three straight blocks to make it 21-19. Another May kill and a 49er error improved the lead to 23-19. The 49ers responded with the next four to even things at 23, but a May kill gave the Bruins a set point. Long Beach State would save that one and another at 25-24. Even at 25, kills by Ryan and Simo closed out the two-point win. May had six kills, Simo was again error-free with five kills in 12 attempts to go with six digs and Barry added 10 digs. The Bruins out-hit the 49ers, .283 to .196.
Set three had eight ties and four lead changes. The Bruins' largest lead was five at 18-13. Even at 21, UCLA scored three of four on a LBSU service error, a Simo ace and a May kill to earn two match points. The 49ers saved them both, scoring the next three to get a set point of their own. However, an LBSU service miscue, a May kill and a Mosser/Ryan block finished up another 27-25 win and the sweep. Mosser was error-free with five kills in seven swings, Harrer added four kills and five digs, Simo had six digs and three kills, May notched four digs and three kills and Ryan posted three kills. The Bruins out-hit the 49ers, .277 to .262.
The Bruins are off to Hawaii next week for three more matches in three days. UCLA will first take on Utah Valley on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:45 p.m. PT.
