UCLA Track and Field Sends Big Contingent to UW Indoor Preview

LOS ANGELES โ UCLA track and field is heading north to Seattle for the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday, Jan. 18. The meet is hosted by the University of Washington and will be run at Dempsey Indoor. The first gun is slated to go off at 8:45 a.m. PT for the women's 3,000m, while the field schedule opens at 9:00 a.m. PT with several events. The Bruins have over 75 entries in this weekend's competition with almost all the student-athletes in UCLA's contingent making their respective season debuts.ย
The Bruin men's squad enters the year at No. 14 in the initial U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll. The 2019 season saw the men's squad finish second at the MPSF Indoor Championships, the team's highest finish since the Bruins won the meet for the second year in a row in 2010. The women finished in 13th place at the league indoor championships last season and checked in at No. 22 in the initial 2020 rankings.ย ย
11 Bruin women will toe the line in the 60m dash, including redshirt sophomore Shae Anderson, a transfer from Oregon who makes her UCLA debut this weekend after sitting out last season. Anderson has a lifetime best of 7.70 in the 60m and took second place in the 400m (52.83) at the 2018 MPSF Indoor Championships. Anderson's father, Mark, was a two-time All-American decathlete for UCLA in the 1980s.
Another Oregon transfer, junior Myles Webb, will lead a group of five Bruins in the men's 60m. Webb competed in the 2019 outdoor season for UCLA, but makes his Bruin indoor debut on Saturday. He enters with a lifetime best of 6.78 in the 60m dash. Freshmen Alex Enos and Ismail Turner will also make their 2020 debuts in the event.
The women's 200m will feature the debut of freshman Maddie Doane, who holds Campolindo High School (Moraga, Calif.) school records in the 100m (12.05), 200m (24.66), 400m (55.52), and 4x100m relay (48.89). Joining Doane on the line will be sophomore Jade Hinds, who competed in the 60m, 200m, and 4x400m relay for the Bruins at the 2019 MPSF Indoor Championships.
Senior Riley Kelly leads the Bruins' middle-distance contingent and makes his season debut in the 600m. Kelly boasts a lifetime-best time of 1:19.99 in the event and finished sixth in the 800m at the league indoor championships last year. Redshirt freshman Jett Charvet, the New Balance National Indoor Champion in the 800m, will also toe the line in the 600m on Saturday.
Seniors Arturo Sotomayor and Jackie Garner will lead UCLA's men's and women's distance squads, respectively, in the mile races. Sotomayor will also run the 3,000m with senior Carter Blunt while senior Cassandra Durgy makes her season debut in the women's 3k competition.ย
Junior Alyssa Wilson, who won the shot put competition at the NAU Duals last week, continues her 2020 campaign in the shot put and weight throw competitions. Veterans Nate Esparza and Jacob Wilson are back for their respective returns to the shot put, while freshman Kain Medrano, a wide receiver for UCLA Football, makes his Bruin field debut in the shot.

Lee cleared 2.17m (7-01.50) at the Don Kirby Invite last indoor season to move into third place all-time in the UCLA indoor record books. He went on to notch a career-best 2.21m (7-03.00) at to finish sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the fifth-best outdoor mark in Bruin history.
Veterans Tate Curran (PR 5.33m, 17-05.75), Michael Fancey (5.22m, 17-01.50), and Kyle Brown (5.02m, 16-05.50) will all make their season debuts in the men's pole vault Saturday. Meanwhile, a quintet of UCLA freshmenโMia Cervantes, Isabella Grant, Eden Henderson, Samantha Serex, and Camryn Thompsonโmake their debut appearances for the Bruins in the women's competition.
