BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA checks in at No. 1 in this week's D1 Softball poll, No. 2 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball and Softball America rankings and No. 3 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. The Bruins were ranked second in the Pac-12 Conference Coaches poll.
BRUINS SWEEP WEEK ONE PAC-12 AWARDS
After posting a 6-0 record during the opening weekend of the 2020 season, the Bruins swept the Pac-12 Conference weekly awards, as announced on Tuesday. Maya Brady was named Player and Freshman of the Week, while sophomore Megan Faraimo earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Brady hit four home runs at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament last weekend, driving in nine, scoring nine times and producing nine hits in 18 at-bats (.500 batting average). Her first collegiate hit on Thursday against CSU Bakersfield was an RBI double, and she kept on hitting from there. Brady's first homer came in the third inning versus CSUB. Following another two-hit game on Friday versus Cal Poly, the freshman left the yard again twice on Saturday, hitting a two-run shot against Pittsburgh and a three-run homer against Bakersfield. On Sunday versus Pitt, she had a pair of hits, including a solo homer, adding an RBI single in the weekend finale against San Diego.
Faraimo won and went the distance in all three of her starts last weekend, striking out 33 and walking none in 17 innings. She gave up only one run and 11 baserunners on 10 hits and a hit by pitch. In the season opener against Bakersfield on Thursday, she struck out 12 in five innings, giving up just one hit and a hit by pitch. The dozen strikeouts had tied a career high, but she bested that mark on Saturday, as Faraimo posted 14 strikeouts versus Pittsburgh, limiting the Panthers to five hits in seven innings. She gave up a run in her final outing of the weekend on Sunday against San Diego, but still struck out seven, allowing four hits in five innings.
This is the second time in as many seasons that the Bruins swept the Pac-12 weekly awards, as last March 19, Rachel Garcia was the Player and Pitcher of the Week, while Kelli Godin was the Freshman of the Week. It is the third time a UCLA player has been named Pac-12 POW and FOW in the same week (Brianna Tautalafua, May 9, 2016; Aaliyah Jordan, April 23, 2018). Faraimo, who earned five Pac-12 FOW honors last season, picked up her first Pitcher of the Week accolade.
NEWS AND NOTES
**The details of freshman Maya Brady's outstanding opening weekend can be found above, as she earned a pair of Pac-12 awards for her performance at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. She had hits in all six wins, runs and RBI in five and homers in four. Brady also showed her versatility with four starts in center field and two at second base.
**Brady was not the only freshman to have an outstanding weekend, as Seneca Curo hit .500 (6-for-12) with 11 RBI, seven runs, two homers and three walks. Curo had hits in each of the last five games of the weekend, launching the first homer of her career, a two-run shot, against Pittsburgh on Saturday. Curo would add another homer versus Pitt the next day, this time a grand slam, adding a bases-loaded hit by pitch for five RBI.
**In a great hitting weekend for all Bruins, it was redshirt junior Aaliyah Jordan who posted the best average, batting .583 (7-for-12) with six RBI, seven runs, three doubles and six walks. Jordan, who has led UCLA in doubles the last two seasons, has 38 for her career. She drove in three on a pair of groundouts in the season opener against CSU Bakersfield and walked three times in the weekend finale versus San Diego.
**Coupled with the outstanding offensive performance last weekend, the amazing pitching can't be forgotten. Faraimo's highlights are detailed above, as she was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, but it was junior Holly Azevedo who did not allow a run last weekend. She tossed 11 scoreless frames, striking out 11 and giving up just seven hits and one walk. Azevedo earned a pair of wins, striking out five on Friday against Cal Poly.
**Junior Delanie Wisz had quite the Bruin debut on Thursday against CSU Bakersfield. The LMU transfer belted a pair of home runs, a two-run shot and a solo bomb, adding a double for a three-hit game. Wisz also had two hits in a second contest versus Bakersfield on Saturday.
**Junior Briana Perez drove in seven during the opening weekend, going 8-for-20 (.400) with eight runs and three steals. She had hits in five of six games, scoring runs in five of six. Perez started the weekend with two hits against CSU Bakersfield, ending the tournament with three hits versus San Diego.
**Along with Faraimo's pitching plaudits, she recorded three walks at the plate before picking up an RBI double, the first hit and RBI of her career, on Sunday against USD.
**Freshman Alyssa Garcia had six hits in 13 at-bats (.462) last weekend, driving in four. She had a pair of games with a single, a double and an RBI (Cal Poly on Friday, San Diego on Sunday), while also driving in two versus Pitt on Sunday.

**Junior Julie Rodriguez had a pinch-hit single in the season opener against Bakersfield, recording two hits, two runs and a walk during the first weekend.
**Sophomore Anna Vines had two hits on Sunday against Pitt, recording a double and a two-run homer, the first long ball of her career.
**Freshman Sara Rusconi Vicinanza's first hit was a long one, as she hit a solo homer to center versus Pitt on Sunday.
**After winning her first-career start against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, freshman Lexi Sosa struck out four in two innings of shutout relief versus Pittsburgh on Sunday.
**Freshman Taylor Edwards picked up her first collegiate hit and RBI on Friday against Cal Poly, also stealing a base.
**Graduate student Jenavee Peres is slated to be available this weekend after sitting out last weekend (knee). San Diego State's record holder in batting average (.409) enters the 2020 season on a career-best, 18-game hitting streak dating back to 2017.
**The Bruins scored 13 runs in the first inning against Pittsburgh on Sunday. It is tied for the second-most runs in one inning in UCLA history (13 versus Cal Poly Pomona in 1992). The record for runs in one inning came last year when UCLA scored 16 versus UC Riverside.
**Rachel Garcia and Bubba Nickles will both redshirt with UCLA this season after they were named to the USA Softball Olympic Team in October. The Bruins will face Garcia, Nickles and Bruin alums Ally Carda and Delaney Spaulding on Sunday, Feb. 23 in Cathedral City when UCLA takes on Team USA in the Stand Beside Her Tour.
