SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UCLA heads up to the San Luis Obispo Country Club this week for the Bruin Wave Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,103-yard layout.
The starting fivesome for the Bruins will be seniors Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi, sophomore Phoebe Yue and freshmen Emilie Paltrinieri and Emma Spitz. Freshmen Annabel Wilson and Yuki Yoshihara will be playing as individuals. UCLA starts its 36-hole journey on Monday at 7:15 a.m. off the first tee in the order of Legaspi, Yue, Galdiano, Spitz and Paltrinieri. Wilson and Yoshihara will be in the same grouping, starting on No. 1 at 8:45 a.m. Tee times on Tuesday will be off split tees beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Joining the 12th-ranked Bruins and co-host and No. 42 Pepperdine in the 12-team field are No. 2 USC, No. 16 Oregon, No. 31 Oregon State, No. 45 San Diego State, No. 48 Northwestern, No. 50 Washington, Cal Poly, CSUN, San Francisco and Washington State (rankings based on Golfweek - Feb. 19).
The Bruins are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (Feb. 9-11, +6, 858). It was the fourth Top 5 showing of the season in six events for UCLA, as it was second at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (Nov. 4-6, -17, 859), tied for second at the Tri-Match in the Desert (Jan. 26, E, 288) and third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 23-25, -5, 859).
Paltrinieri was the top finisher for the Bruins at the NGRC, shooting 69-67 in the final two rounds to post a 4-under 209 to place solo fourth. It was her third Top 20 of the year, as she tied for 12th at the Tri-Match (+2, 74) and tied for 18th at the Golfweek Challenge (+1, 217).
Spitz was the top Bruin in each of the first three tournaments and has four Top 10s and five Top 20s in her six events. She was third at Golfweek (-8, 208), fourth at the Tri-Match (-1, 71), tied for seventh at both Nanea (-4, 215) and the Regional Challenge (-2, 211) and tied for 11th at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 11-13, -1, 212).
Galdiano has two Top 10s on the year, tying for second at Nanea (-7, 212) and tying for fifth at the Tri-Match (E, 72). Legaspi tied for second at the Tri-Match (-2, 70), while Yue was under par in her final round at the NGRC, shooting a 1-under 70 (T-47). Wilson tied for ninth at the Tri-Match (+1, 73) and tied for 16th at Golfweek (E, 216) and Yoshihara tied for 18th at Golfweek (+1, 217).
UCLA was fourth at the Bruin Wave Invitational last season, having finished second the previous two years. This is the fifth year the Bruin Wave has been held in San Luis Obispo, with UCLA winning in 2016.
