UCLA Falls to Arizona State in Five Sets

TEMPE, Ariz. โ Three Bruins recorded double-digit kill performances in the Bruins' five set loss to the Sun Devils at Desert Financial Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate outside hitter Mac May led No. 14 UCLA (13-3, 6-2 Pac-12) with 20 kills โ her sixth 20-kill outing of the season โ and 12 digs for a double-double against Arizona State (9-10, 2-6 Pac-12). Freshman outside hitter Charitie Luper also picked up a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs in addition to her four blocks and three assists. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Anna Dodson posted 10 kills and team-high six blocks.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 8-15.

Three consecutive kills by Luper stretched UCLA's lead to six points, 17-11, in the opening set. The Bruins would record 17 total kills โ six from May and Luper, respectively โ and a 75 percent sideout rate in set one.

Graduate setter Shelby Martin recorded a set-high 12 of her 43 total assists in the second set. Dodson went 5-for-7 on her swings for five kills at a .571 hitting percentage. The Bruins went on a 5-0 run behind two Luper service aces, back-to-back kills from May and a kill by Dodson to close the frame.

UCLA was held to sub-.250 hitting percentages in each of the last three sets while the Sun Devils hit at a .382 and .316 clip in the fourth and fifth sets, respectively.

Senior libero Zoe Fleck led UCLA's five double-digit dig performances with 18.

Sophomore setter Kate Lane was subbed into the fifth set for her first action of the season and immediately put up points for the Bruins; Lane recorded a kill and block assist for 2 of UCLA's final six points of the match.
