UCLA Cruises to 3-0 Sweep at Oregon State
November 12, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. โ Graduate outside hitter Mac May led the Bruins with 19 kills and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Anna Dodson recorded double-digit kills in her third consecutive match with 11 at a .500 clip as No. 12 UCLA swept Oregon State for the second time this season, 3-0, in Gill Coliseum Friday night.
ย
The Bruins (20-3, 13-2 Pac-12) racked up 48 kills, twenty more than the Beavers, and held Oregon State (4-21, 2-13 Pac-12) to -.067 and .051 hitting percentages in the final two sets to cruise to their 20th victory of the season โ the first team in the Pac-12 to reach the benchmark. ย
ย
Graduate setter Shelby Martin went to Dodson early in the first frame, finding the Fort Collins, Colo., native for two kills to help UCLA out to a 5-1 lead. However, four consecutive Bruin attack errors gave Oregon State its first lead, 9-8, and the two teams traded points until the score was knotted 19-all.
ย
The Bruins, and Martin once again, found the cushion they needed with Dodson, going to her for back-to-back kills. Dodson was 5-for-8 on her swings in the first set. May was responsible for a team-high eight kills in the Bruins' 21 first-set kill total, 16 of which Martin assisted on.
ย
UCLA went on three separate runs of 5-0, 4-0 and 5-0 in the second set, the last of which involved four consecutive Oregon State attack errors following the 21-14 mark to close out the set. UCLA needed just 11 kills at a .308 clip to take a two-set lead as the Beavers recorded more attack errors (9) than kills (7) to hit in the negative.
ย
The Bruins dug themselves into a 6-1 hole to open the third set, but following a timeout called by head coach Michael Sealy, UCLA went on an 8-2 run featuring two kills apiece from May and Dodson and three Beaver attack errors.
ย
UCLA took its first lead of the set at 12-11 and would not look back, outscoring its opponent 13-5 with eight of the Bruins' points coming by the way of kills. May scored another eight kills in the set, including the match finisher which capped a 4-0 run.
ย
Three Bruins recorded double-digit digs in the contest: Zoe Fleck (11), Allison Jacobs (11), élan McCall (10).
