No. 13 UCLA Defeats Cal, 3-0
November 24, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES โ Mac May totaled 23 points off a match-high 17 kills and six service aces as the No. 13-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team defeated Cal 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
ย
The Bruins (23-4, 16-3 Pac-12) finished their regular season home schedule undefeated, 10-0, for the first time since the 1999 season. The Bears (7-23, 0-19 Pac-12) trailed UCLA for the entirety of the first two sets until gaining their first lead in the first points of the third. A kill and three service aces from May amidst a 6-0 UCLA run quickly seized Cal's momentum, as the Bruins went up 6-2 and on to win in straight sets with scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20.
ย
Outside hitter Allison Jacobs was UCLA's second leading scorer with nine kills and an ace, and middle blocker Anna Dodson added seven kills on just 11 swings. Libero Zoe Fleck matched a season-high of three aces.
ย
With the Bruins' 13 service aces today, UCLA's top two performances from the service line this season have come in back-to-back contests after setting a high of 14 aces versus Arizona last Sunday, Nov. 21. UCLA had not reached double-digits aces in any match prior.
ย
Leading the team was May, whose performance comes on the heels of a career-high eight aces against the Wildcats, tying a single-match program record set previously by Liz Masakayan in 1983 and Bojana Todorovic in 2011.
ย
May scored three consecutive kills for the match's first points to help UCLA jump out to a 10-5 lead in the first set. Libero libero Zoe Fleck's second ace of the set at 18-15 kickstarted a 7-2 run, capped by Dodson's fifth kill to close out the frame.
ย
Outside hitter élan McCall also recorded two aces in the set.
ย
UCLA raced to a 6-0 lead to begin the second behind three kills from McCall, middle blocker Emily Ryan and Jacobs, and a May service ace, which moved May ahead of Elaine Youngs (1988-92) into third place on UCLA's all-time ace list. May finished the match at 170 career aces.
ย
May's 17 kills pushed her career total to 1,981. She is nineteen shy of becoming the fourth Bruin to join the 2,000 kill club and first ever to accomplish the feat in the rally scoring era.
ย
Outside hitter Lydia Grote โ Cal's team-leader with eight kills โ evened the third set at 10-10. May tallied the fourth of her six kills in the frame to sideout on the next play. The Bruins strung together three more kills, another coming from May and one each from Ryan and McCall to give UCLA the cushion it needed to finish the match.
ย
The Bruins return to action after Thanksgiving with an opportunity to secure their first conference title since 1999 in the regular season finaleย against USC in the Galen Center on Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. PT. The contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
