The All-Time Series Against Cal State Fullertonย ย  ย
UCLA owns a 38-68-2 all-time record against Cal State Fullerton, including a 15-27 mark under head coach John Savage. More recently, the Bruins have won their last three matchups with the Titans and four of the last five. Exempting 2020, UCLA and Cal State Fullerton have met at least once every year since 1974, a streak of 45 consecutive seasons. The Bruins and Titans will see plenty of each other in early March, as the two teams are scheduled to meet three times in an eight-day span starting on Tuesday.ย

Midweek Notes
UCLA is 14-1 in midweeks over the last two-plus seasons, including an unbeaten 11-0 mark in 2019. UCLA opened its midseason ledger in 2021 with a 5-2 victory at home over LMU on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The Bruins went 2-1 in midweeks last year, topping Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine at home before falling on the road at UC Santa Barbara for the team's first loss of the year. The Bruins are slated to face just four teams in midweeks in 2021: Loyola Marymount, Cal State Fullerton, Pepperdine, and Nevada.

The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA went 3-1 last week, topping LMU at home in a midweek before winning two of three over the weekend against UC Irvine. The Bruins and Anteaters played a home-and-away series, with the Friday and Sunday games taking place in Los Angeles and the Saturday game in Irvine.ย
  • The Bruins opened the week with a 5-2 victory over Loyola Marymount on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Sean Mullen led the Bruins to the win with 7 1/3 strong innings, allowing two unearned runs and walking none while striking out a career-high seven batters. UCLA went ahead for good with four runs in the sixth, stringing together three singles early in the inning, taking advantage of an LMU miscue on a sac bunt to plate the game-tying run, then bringing in two more runs - including the game-winning run - on an RBI groundout and wild pitch. Kyle Mora picked up the win for UCLA, capping off 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Bruin bullpen.ย
  • UCLA began its series against UCI with a 4-3, walk-off win on Friday night. The Bruins trailed for most of the game, but leveled the score at 3-3 with two runs in the seventh, then rallied for the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Mikey Perez opened that rally by stinging a one-hop liner off the glove of the UCI third baseman and into left field for a double, then UCLA loaded the bases on an opposite-field single from Kyle Karros and an intentional walk to Kevin Kendall. Jack Filby "drove in" the game-winning run with a bases-loaded walk, and didn't have to take the bat off his shoulder as he reached on four straight pitches out of the zone.ย
  • The Bruins dropped game two of the series, in Irvine, 7-3. The Anteaters jumped out to an early advantage with four unearned runs in the first inning and would lead 7-0 after three full. UCLA's bullpen held UCI off the board the rest of the way, throwing a combined five scoreless innings of relief. Kendall had a pair of base hits in the loss. Saturday's affair marked the first time in six career February starts that Jesse Bergin allowed an earned run (31 1/3 innings).ย
  • UCLA captured the series win with a 4-0 victory on Sunday, the team's first shutout of 2021. Nick Nastrini led the way with six innings of one-hit ball, allowing only a fifth-inning single and striking out seven. Michael Townsend, Kyle Mora, and Sean Mullen all followed with scoreless innings of relief to complete the blanking. UCLA led 1-0 most of the game following a first inning Michael Curialle sac fly, padding the lead with a three-spot in the seventh highlighted by a Jarron Silva pinch-hit RBI single and a two-run double off the left field wall by Kyle Karros.ย
Home Cookingย ย  ย
The Bruins have a home-heavy schedule to start the season, playing 10 of their first 11 games of the season at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA leaves Southern California just once before the end of March, a three-game set at Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) from Mar. 12-14.ย

In This Week's Pollsย ย  ย
UCLA appeared in all five major national polls on Monday, ranking as high as No. 8 (D1Baseball) and remaining top-10 in Baseball America (No. 9), NCBWA (No. 9), and the USA Today Coaches Poll (No. 10).ย

Return of the Zachย ย  ย
Senior RHP Zach Pettway - the D1Baseball and Baseball America Preseason Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year - made his 2021 debut on Friday, pitching a scoreless sixth. Facing the 5-6-7 spots in the lineup, Pettway fanned the first batter he faced on a fastball, then after hitting the next batter with a 2-2 offering, ended the frame wiith a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play. UCLA's Opening Day starter in 2019 and 2020, Pettway is 13-6 with a 3.42 ERA over 186 2/3 career innings.

Bullpen Returns to Formย ย  ย
After allowing 15 runs in the team's opening series, UCLA's bullpen returned to form last week. Over the Bruins' four games, UCLA relievers allowed no runs and just eight hits over 14 1/3 innings while striking out 13. That included a pair of heavy duty assignments, as the Bruins tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings on Friday and five shutout innings on Saturday.ย

On the Runย ย  ย
UCLA has been active on the basepaths so far in 2021, swiping 11 bags in 13 attempts (85% success rate). The Bruins have the second-most team stolen bases in the Pac-12 (Washington, 15) and rank 28th nationally. Kevin Kendall has a team-high four stolen bases in five attempts, while Jarron Silva, Mikey Perez, and Noah Cardenas are all 2-2 in stolen base attempts.ย

Quality Controlย ย  ย
UCLA's starting pitching has opened the year on a strong note, with Bruin starters combining for a 2.56 ERA and 10.7 K/9 ratio through the season's first four games. Bruin starters have allowed three earned runs or fewer in all seven of the team's games, and allowed no earned runs in three contests.ย
