Bruins Travel to San Diego State, Host Stanford in Busy Week
The UCLA men's soccer team begins the second half of its Pac-12 schedule this week, traveling to San Diego State for a 6:00 p.m. matchup on Wednesday night and then returning to Wallis Annenberg Stadium to host Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game against the Aztecs will be streamed, while the Pac-12 Networks will televise Sunday's contest. Fans can follow along with live stats for both games at UCLAlivestats.com and live updates from the team Twitter account, @UCLAMSoccer.
On The Road
Wednesday's contest at San Diego State marks the end of a stretch that sees the Bruins play four of five games away from home, the most road-heavy stretch on the 2020-21 schedule. UCLA has had just one home game since Feb. 21.
Right Back At it Again
The Bruins are scheduled to host Stanford at Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Sunday, marking just the second time this season that UCLA will play multiple games in the same week. UCLA is in a stretch of playing three games over nine days, its most concentrated portion of the schedule.
Creating Chances
Despite not getting a result, UCLA has out-shot and out-chanced its opponents over the last two games, particularly at Cal this past Saturday. The Bruins won the shot battle 14-4 over the Golden Bears, with the plus-10 advantage tied for the largest for UCLA under second-year head coach Ryan Jorden. UCLA has outshot its opponents by a margin of 23-12 over the last two games (vs. Washington, at Cal).
The Week in Review
UCLA dropped a 2-0 decision at Cal last Saturday in the team's lone contest of the week. The game was much closer than the scoreline would indicate, as the Bruins outshot the Golden Bears 14-4. Cal notched just two shots on goal in the whole contest, scoring on both. Riley Ferch had a game-high four shots. Andrew Paoli, Kevin Diaz, and Ahmed Longmire all logged quality scoring chances, with Paoli coming closest after hitting the right post in the 78th minute.
Tough Road
UCLA's scheduled opponents for the 2020-21 season have accrued a .717 winning percentage to this point in the season, the highest mark of any team in the NCAA (and the only school over .700). UCLA had the 12th-toughest schedule in the NCAA for the 2019 season (.609 opponents winning percentage) and was the only west coast school in the top-15.
Newcomers Making Contributions
Three of UCLA's five goals (60%), four of six assists (67%), and 10 of 16 points (63%) have been scored by players who were not regulars on last year's squad. The Bruins are led in scoring by true freshman Grayson Doody (1-1-3), who notched his first career goal in highlight-reel fashion at Oregon State on Feb. 27.
The Series Against SDSU
The Bruins own a 44-7-14 record all-time against San Diego State, including a 19-4-8 mark since the Aztecs joined the Pac-12 Conference as an affiliate for men's soccer in 2005. UCLA has won or split the series in all but one year (2007) since 2005, and carries a three-game unbeaten streak in the series into Wednesday's game.
Last Time Out Vs. SDSU
UCLA and San Diego State battled to a 1-1 tie on Feb. 20, 2021 at Wallis Annenberg Stadium, in the Pac-12 opener for both schools. The Bruins and Aztecs traded second-half goals, with Ollie de Visser opening the scoring in the 73rd minute and Blake Bowen equalizing for SDSU at the 77:47 mark. It was the first career goal for de Visser, who collected his own rebound after his initial shot was saved, then beat the keeper with a left-footed strike. Ruben Soria hit the crossbar in overtime for UCLA, and SDSU had a golden goal wiped off by an offside call with less than 60 seconds remaining in the second overtime session.
