LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter Charitie Luperย led the 18th-ranked Bruins (4-0) with a match-high-tying 17 kills as UCLA stung 16th-ranked Georgia Tech (4-1) in four sets on Saturday afternoonย at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, 25-27, 25-11.

UCLA improved to 3-0 all-time against the Yellow Jackets as the match marked the first meeting between the two teams since 1994.

Offensively, the Bruins came out on fire and ended the fourth set on fire, winning both of those sets in blowout fashion by identical scores of 25-11. UCLA hit a blistering .519 (15K, 1E, 27TA) in the first set while holding Georgia Tech to .059 (9K, 7E, 34TA). In the fourth set, the Bruins had a sideout percentage of 90 percent while hitting .345 (12K, 2E, 29TA). UCLA's defense was at its best in the fourth and final set, forcing the Yellow Jackets to hit negative in the set (-.088, 6K, 9E, 34TA). For the match, UCLA outhit Georgia Tech .289 to .110. The Bruins won almost every statistical category, leading in kills (54-42), digs (65-58), aces (6-3), blocks (11.0-6.0), and assists (50-38). However, UCLA had more service errors (10-8).

Luper also added eight digs, two blocks (one solo) and one assist in her breakout match. Mac May was steady as always with a double-double of 16 kills and 11 digs to go with two blocks. Anna Dodson had another solid outing with seven kills, a match-high six blocks, and one ace. Shelby Martin also turned in a double-double performance of 39 assists and 12 digs to go with five kills, three blocks, and two aces. Zoe Fleck nearly had a double-double as she tallied a match-high 16 digs and registered eight assists and an ace.ย élan McCallย chipped in 13 digs, two aces, and an assist to bolster the Bruins' defense.ย Iman Ndiayeย contributed four kills and two digs while Francesca Alupeiย recorded five kills and four blocks for UCLA.

Georgia Tech was led by Mariana Brambillaย who had 17 kills and 12 digs. Julia Bergmannย also had a double-double for the Yellow Jackets with 13 kills and 12 digs.

The Bruins are back in action next week when they travel to San Diego, Calif., to participate in the USD Invitational. The Bruins will open with the Toreros on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Jenny Craig Pavilion. UCLA will close out the tournament on Friday, Sept. 10 with a match at San Diego State at 7:00 p.m. at Aztec Court at Peterson Gym.
