UCLA Drops Dual Meet to No. 11 Cal, 169-125

January 28, 2023 | Swimming & Diving

BERKELEY, Calif. โ€“ Sophomore Eva Carlson and senior Rachel Rhee both delivered doubles, but the No. 24-ranked UCLA swim and dive team endured a 169-125 loss to No. 11 California on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatic Complex.

Carlson (100 breast, 200 breast) and Rhee (50 free, 100 free) were responsible for all four individual swim wins for UCLA (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12). Divers Zoe Jespersgaard and Eden Cheng were also granted wins based on diving results at Stanford on Friday, as Cal entered no divers into the dual meet.

Cal improved to 7-1, 5-1.

Carlson brought home UCLA's first win of the meet, holding off Cal's Leah Polonsky in the 100 breast. The result marked a weekend sweep for Carlson in that event, as she also touched first in the Stanford meet on Friday.

Rhee led the Bruins in a 1-2 finish in the 50 free, as she was followed in quick succession by fifth-year teammate Claire Grover.

Rhee picked up another win in the very next event, going 49.73 in the 100 free. She was one of just two swimmers to break 50 seconds in that race.

Carlson completed the two-fer with a strong showing in the 200 breast, touching in 2:16.52 to beat out the field by nearly two seconds.

Freshman distance freestyler Katrina Bellio also had a strong performance for UCLA, finishing runner-up in both the 500 free (4:57.38) and 1000 free (10:01.53).

UCLA is off next week, returning to action on Friday, Feb. 10 at USC in the final dual meet of the season for both squads. ย
