UCLA Posts Highest Season-Opening Score in 18 Years

January 07, 2023 | Gymnastics

Las Vegas, Nev. – No. 10 UCLA went toe-to-toe with three of the Top 5 teams in the nation, posting its highest season-opening team score in 18 years with a 197.275. The Bruins scored 49.0 or higher on all four events, recording 11 scores of 9.9 or higher, and hit 24-for-24 routines without a fall while finishing fourth overall. No. 1 Oklahoma placed first with a 197.925, No. 4 Michigan finished second with a 197.400, and No. 5 Auburn was third with a 197.350.

Sophomore Jordan Chiles placed second in the all-around behind her Olympic teammate Suni Lee, with Chiles scoring 39.650 to Lee's 39.750. Chiles tied for first on uneven bars with a 9.975 and scored 9.900 on both vault and floor exercise. Freshman Selena Harris, competing in her hometown of Las Vegas, tied for fifth place with a 39.500 after recording 9.900s on vault, bars and floor. Junior Chae Campbell tied for first on floor with a 9.950 and scored 39.350 in the all-around and 9.925 on vault.

In addition to Harris, three other Bruins made their UCLA debuts. Sophomore Emily Lee, who missed the 2022 season while recovering from an Achilles tear, hit a 9.850 on vault and 9.775 on bars. Freshman Maddie Anyimi hit a 9.775 on vault, and freshman Ciena Alipio, who came in as a late replacement, hit in a pressure situation for a 9.750.

UCLA got things started with a 49.400 on floor exercise thanks to three scores of 9.9 or higher. After Katie McNamara led off with a 9.775, Emma Malabuyo and Harris posted back-to-back 9.9s. Chiles scored 9.875, and Campbell closed the rotation with a 9.950. The Bruins' first rotation score put them in a tie for second with Auburn and behind Oklahoma by just .025. The Bruins scored 49.375 on vault in rotation two, led by Campbell's huge stuck Yurchenko full that scored 9.925, and 9.9s from Harris and Chiles. The score kept the Bruins in second, just one-tenth behind Oklahoma.

In rotation three, UCLA hit a big 49.500 on uneven bars, led by Chiles' 9.975, Margzetta Frazier's 9.950 and Harris' 9.900. Ana Padurariu contributed a 9.850, Campbell contributed a 9.825, and Lee hit for a 9.775. Oklahoma increased its lead ever so slightly to .125 after scoring 49.525 on beam. The Bruins were unable to maintain their lead over Michigan and Auburn in the final rotation after the first two competitors encountered issues on connections that resulted in scores of 9.300 and 9.650. Chiles righted the ship with a confident and skillful 9.900 routine that was highlighted by a stuck double pike dismount, and Malabuyo closed the meet for the Bruins with a 9.900 to give UCLA a 49.000.

UCLA, whose 197.275 total was the sixth-highest score in the nation this season so far, will next compete against Boise State, Minnesota and Washington on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2pm PT at the Wasatch Classic in West Valley City, Utah.
