UCLA Defeats UC San Diego on the Road, 193-99

LA JOLLA, Calif. โ The UCLA swim and dive team opened the 2023 portion of its schedule with a 193-99 win over UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
With the result, the Bruins improved to 5-0 on the season in dual meets. UCLA also moved its all-time record against UCSD to 4-0, including a 3-0 mark under fourth-year head coach Jordan Wolfrum.
Saturday's score of 193 marked a season-high for the Bruins, topping the previous season-best of 183 accomplished against Arizona State on Nov. 5.
Overall, UCLA won 12 of 16 scheduled events on Saturday, including sweeps in the relays, sprint freestyle, diving, butterfly, and backstroke events.
Nine different Bruins recorded individual event wins, including a double for senior Hannah Butler who swept the 1-meter (282.75) and 3-meter (304.87) diving events.
UCLA opened the meet with a strong showing in the 400 medley relay, as the quartet of Sophia Kosturos, Eva Carlson, Gabby Dang, and Claire Grover went 3:41.14 to be out the field by nearly three seconds.
Sophomore Paige MacEachern was the Bruins' top finisher in the 1000 free, posting a time of 10:09.17 as the runner-up.
Sophomore Gizem Guvenc then captured UCLA's first individual event win of the day, going 1:50.51 in the 200 free. Senior Brooke Schaffer (1:51.25, third) and freshman Ava Lachey (1:52.69, fourth) also scored.
Kosturos made it back-to-back wins for the Bruins after posting a 55.24 in the 100 back. Sophomore Mia Chang (56.76) wasn't far behind en route to a second-place result.
The 100 breast saw UCLA's Ana Jih-Schiff (1:02.23) and Carlson (1:02.53) place 2-3.
In the next race, freshman Fay Lustria (2:05.64) charged from behind during the final 50 yards to edge out UCSD's Valerie Yue (2:05.75) for first place in the 200 fly. It was Lustria's first collegiate event win.
The first portion of the meet was closed out by a 1-2-3 finish for UCLA in the 50 free, with senior Rachel Rhee (22.81) winning the event. Grover (23.23) and junior Maddie Wright (23.97) were 2-3.
The Bruins came right back with another sweep in the 100 free, with Grover (50.99), Schaffer (51.24), and Guvenc (51.69) taking the top three spots.
Freshman Rosie Murphy (1:58.98) led another sweep for the Bruins in the next event, the 200 back. She beat out the field by nearly five seconds.
UCSD bounced back to post wins in both the 200 breast and 500 free, but it was all Bruins the rest of the way as the hosts were held without an event win the rest of the meet.
Senior Gabby Dang (54.92, 100 fly), and MacEachern (4:22.47, 400 IM) each nabbed wins in the final two individual races of the afternoon.
UCLA returns to Spieker Aquatics Center next weekend for the squad's final home events of the season. The Bruins are scheduled to host the Bruin Diving Invitational from Jan. 13-15, and will also welcome Denver for a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 14. Events will start at 10:30 a.m. each day. The Bruins will honor their 10 seniors prior to the Denver meet.ย
