Bruins Shut Out Cougars, 2-0

October 01, 2023 | Women's Soccer

Pullman, Wash. โ€“ No. 5 UCLA shut out No. 23 Washington State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon, improving its record to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-12. Lexi Wright scored the game-winning goal and assisted on Ally Cook's second-half goal, and Neeku Purcell recorded her fifth solo shutout of the season.

Wright put the Bruins on the board in the 13th minute. After receiving a pass from Ally Lemos, Wright deked a Cougar defender onto her seat and then fired a rocket into the upper right corner for her second goal of the year. ย

Cook doubled up UCLA's lead in the 69th minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the year and second goal of the weekend. Wright set her up on the goal, taking a pass from Quincy McMahon and dribbling up the left side before sending a perfect ball in to Cook in the box. Cook beat her defender to the ball and one-timed a shot past Washington State goalkeeper Nadia Cooper. The Bruin defense kept the Cougars (7-4, 0-3) at bay, with Purcell saving a free kick in the 21st minute and a close-range shot in the 35th minute. In the 57th minute, defender Maya Evans blocked a shot in the box after a free kick. Evans also raced back to snuff out a Margie Detrizio scoring attempt in the 76th minute. UCLA limited Washington State to just two shots on goal and seven shots overall.

UCLA's offense peppered Cooper with 19 shots, including six on goal. Wright was dangerous all game, forcing Cooper into a save in the 61st minute and stealing a pass and missing high on a shot in the 62nd minute. Reilyn Turner had five shots, forcing Cooper into an incredible save in the 65th minute, and just missing wide on a sliding shot near the left corner in the 68th minute. America Frias hit the crossbar on a long-range shot in the 79th minute.

The Bruins return home to host Oregon State on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Oregon on Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 8. ย
