UCLA Falls in Four to California

LOS ANGELES โ Grayce Olson scored a career-high 19 kills to lead the UCLA women's volleyball team in a 3-1 loss to California at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Sunday afternoon.

Set scores were 21-25, 25-19, 20-25 and 23-25.

The Bruins (16-12, 8-10) hit below .150 in each of the three sets they lost, and recorded 51 kills for a .169 hitting percentage total in the match. UCLA was two points away from forcing a fifth set, holding a brief 23-22 lead following a kill by middle blocker Desiree Becker. Three consecutive kills by Golden Bears (16-13, 5-13) outside hitter Maggie Li secured her team's victory.

Li finished the match with 23 kills for a .228 hitting percentage.

Becker was effective when distributed the ball, recording eight kills on 19 swings with only one error. Kate Lane started in the place of Anna Dodson at middle blocker and produced four block assists. Senior Iman Ndiaye joined Olson in double-figures with 10 kills at a .167 clip.

California's largest lead of set one was seven points with a 16-9 buffer. The Bruins proceeded to go on an 11-3 run with solid serving rotations by Audrey Pak and Peyton Dueck. A kill by Olson, an ace by Pak and block by Lane and Ndiaye helped trim the Golden Bears' lead to three points at 16-13. The second burst with Dueck at the service line featured an ace, two kills by Cheridyn Leverette, a kill by Becker and solo block by Ndiaye. Li answered the flurry of points with four kills amidst a 7-2 California run to close the first set. She recorded eight total kills in the frame.

UCLA answered emphatically in set two, hitting for 16 kills at a .400 hitting percentage. Ndiaye paced the Bruins' attack with five kills while Becker, Leverette, Pak and Lane totaled seven error-free kills. Back-to-back aces by Mokihana Tufono put UCLA up 7-3 early in the set. Tufono finished the day with three aces and has totaled 11 across her last three matches.

The Golden Bears cut the Bruins lead to three points at 22-19 and forced UCLA head coach Alfee Reft to call a timeout. Ndiaye and Olson swung for back-to-back kills out of the break to help UCLA even the match at a set apiece.
