Bruins Sweep Wildcats to Even Season Series

November 05, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's volleyball team rallied late to win each of its three sets in a sweep over Arizona at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Sunday afternoon.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-22 and 25-22.

Grayce Olson and Cheridyn Leverette each recorded double-digit kills for the Bruins (14-10, 6-8) with 11 and 10, respectively. The two pin hitters swung at an effective rate, too, tallying a combined hitting percentage of .405. Middle blocker Desiree Becker was an error-free 5-for-6 on swings while tallying four blocks defensively.

The Bruins spotted 14, 13 and 10 kills across the three sets for a team hitting percentage of .268. UCLA totaled six service aces in the match, including a career-high three service aces for Iman Ndiaye.

The Wildcats' (6-19, 1-13) Jordan Wilson registered a match-high 13 kills.

UCLA trailed for the majority of set one. Head coach Alfee Reft called a timeout with the Bruins down, 19-16. On the first play out of the break, Leverette connected with setter Audrey Pak for a kill, and a Wildcats attack error put UCLA within one. Pak found middle Anna Dodson for a kill at a critical point at the 22-20 mark to keep the Bruins within striking distance. Once again, Pak went to her middle blockers, this time to Becker for a set-tying kill at 23-23. Becker batted down an attack by Arizona's Sofia Maldonado Diaz on the next play to bring set point to the line, giving the Bruins their first lead since their ninth point of the set.

Pak concluded the first-set victory with an ace.

Leverette tallied two kills and a block to help UCLA to a 5-1 buffer to begin set two. Arizona went on to take its first lead of set two on back-to-back blocks to lead to a media timeout, 15-14. Olson picked up four of her six kills in set two after that mark. She forced the Wildcats to burn a timeout with a kill at 22-20 and trotted back out after the break and swung for another. The Pleasanton, Calif. native put an exclamation point on the end of set two with a monster block to give the Bruins the momentum heading into set three.

UCLA trailed for a third time at the media timeout in set three, 15-12. A sideout kill by Ndiaye brought herself to the service line where she went on a 5-0 service run with two aces, pushing UCLA into the lead at 18-16. Back-to-back blocks by Becker put the Bruins within two points of victory, 23-19. Ndiaye put the finishing touches on her impressive set with a kill for match point.

UCLA is on the road next week for two matches at Washington State on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. (PT) and Washington on Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. (PT).
