Chiles' Perfect 10 Highlights 197.800-196.900 Win Over ASU

February 11, 2023 | Gymnastics

LOS ANGELES - Jordan Chiles' perfect 10 on floor and career-high 39.825 all-around score catapulted No. 6 UCLA to a 197.800-196.900 victory over No. 20 Arizona State in Pauley Pavilion, presented by Wescom. Chiles won the all-around for the second consecutive meet and nearly swept the events, winning vault (9.950), uneven bars (9.975) and floor (10.0). Bruin freshman Selena Harris was the only other event winner, taking first place on balance beam with a career-high-tying 9.950. The Bruins (5-4-1, 2-1-1 in the Pac-12) trailed the Sun Devils (4-5, 1-3) following the first rotation after scoring just 49.125 on vault. Chiles' 9.950 was the only vault that scored over 9.850, although a few Bruins stuck their landings but had other deductions. Chae Campbell had the Bruins' second-best score with a 9.850, and Harris scored 9.800 after taking a hop back on her Yurchenko 1.5. Arizona State grabbed the early lead with a 49.425 score on uneven bars, led by a 9.925 from Jada Mangahas and a 9.900 from Emily White.

UCLA bested Arizona State's bars score in the next rotation, however, scoring a season-high 49.575, which tied for the ninth-highest bars score in school history. Ana Padurariu tied her career-high for the second-straight meet with a 9.900. Harris scored 9.950, Chiles earned a 10 from one judge and scored her third 9.975 of the season, and Margzetta Frazier scored 9.900 to wrap up the rotation. The Sun Devils' vault total matched the Bruins' first rotation mark, and their 49.125 dropped them to second place, .150 behind the Bruins. Both teams had strong third rotations, with Arizona State totaling 49.350 on floor, with five scores of 9.850 or higher, including a 9.900 from Hannah Scharf. But the Bruins used three 9.9+ routines to earn a total of 49.425 and increase their lead slightly to .225. Emily Lee earned her third-straight leadoff beam score of 9.900 to set the tone, and Ciena Alipio followed with a 9.825. Chiles hit a 9.900, Harris had a flawless 9.950 routine, and Emma Malabuyo closed with a 9.850. UCLA pulled away in the fourth and final rotation, scoring a season-high 49.675 on floor exercise, which also tied for the ninth-highest score in school history. Lee delivered another leadoff 9.900, a new career-best for her. Malabuyo matched her score with a season-high-tying 9.900. Harris stuck cold her first two tumbling passes and earned a 9.950 from one judge but a 9.800 from the other, giving her a 9.875 final score. Frazier performed one of her best routines of her career, tying her personal-best mark with a 9.950. Chiles, who has been on the verge of a perfect 10 on floor the last three meets, finally earned her first 10.0 of the year with her 90's hip-hop routine featuring three double-salto passes. Campbell put an exclamation point on the day with a 9.925. Arizona State finished the day with a team-high 9.875 from Scharf on beam, leading to a team score of 49.000. Chiles' 39.825 all-around score ranks sixth all-time at UCLA and is the program's highest all-around score since Kyla Ross also scored 39.825 on Feb. 23, 2020.

"She just brings so much to our team," said UCLA head coach Janelle McDonald about Chiles. "Her energy every single day, she just brings it, and she lights up the room that she's in, and she just pushes herself to be the very best that she can be. We had a lot of talks this week about not focusing on the scores but just focusing on being the very best that we can be and improving a little bit here and there throughout the week. It was really cool to see her focus in on that and not focus on the scores, so for her to dial in that routine so well and be rewarded with a 10 was really special."

UCLA will next compete at California on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2pm in a meet that will be televised live on Pac-12 Network.
