The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA is coming off a series sweep of Omaha to open the 2023 season:
  • The Bruins posted a 16-1 win on Opening Day, going ahead for good with back-to-back crooked numbers starting in the fourth before putting the game on ice with a 10-run eighth inning. Kyle Karros went 3-4 and drove in a pair to lead the Bruins offensively. Jake Brooks drew the Opening Day start, striking out eight over five innings and ceding just one run. Four Bruin relievers chipped in a scoreless inning apiece to close it out.
  • UCLA won the series with a 23-0 rout on Saturday. It represented the Bruins' most runs in a shutout in program history. Six separate Bruins had multiple hits in the win, four launched a home run, and five batters finished with at least four RBIs. Ultimately, the offense scored in seven of eight innings. Meanwhile on the mound, Alonzo Tredwell struck out a career-high 10 over six innings in his first-ever collegiate start. Tredwell retired 10 batters in a row between innings 2-5, and held Omaha hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position.ย
  • The Bruins finished off the sweep with an 8-1 win on Sunday. Jack Holman put UCLA up for good with a two-run homer into The Giff in the second inning, and that proved to be enough as Kelly Austin and six relievers combined to hold the Mavericks to one run on six hits. UCLA put the game away with a three-spot in the seventh followed by a moonshot two-run homer from JonJon Vaughns in the eighth.ย
  • With the results, UCLA improved to 13-6 on Opening Day under John Savage and won its opening series for the ninth time in the last 11 years. The Bruins were opening the season at home for the 13th consecutive year.ย
In The Pollsย ย  ย
UCLA enters the week ranked in every major national poll, checking in as high as No. 10 (Collegiate Baseball) while also appearing at No. 13 (Baseball America, NCBWA) and No. 17 (D1Baseball). The Bruins appeared at No. 15 in the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll, which was not updated as of Monday. This weekend's series against No. 5 Vanderbilt represents UCLA's first games against a ranked opponent this season.ย

The Series Against Pepperdineย ย  ย
UCLA leads the all-time series against Pepperdine, 67-40-4. The Bruins are 21-7 against Pepperdine under John Savage, including a 7-1 mark in the last eight head-to-head matchups.ย

Last Year Against Pepperdineย ย  ย
UCLA split a pair of midweeks against Pepperdine last year, dropping a 7-5 result at home on Feb. 22 before returning the favor with a 9-7 victory in Malibu on Apr. 12. The game-winning run was scored in the ninth inning in both contests.
  • Feb. 22, 2022 in brief: A trio of then-freshman pitchers โ€” Ethan Flanagan (8 Ks in 3.2 IP), Alonzo Tredwell (7 Ks in 2.2 IP), and Luke Jewett (2 Ks in 1.2 IP) โ€” combined to strike out 17 batters, but Pepperdine rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to claim a 7-5 win at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins, trailing 7-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, rallied for a pair of runs to make it a two-run game but couldn't complete the comeback.ย
  • Apr. 12, 2022 in brief: UCLA posted three-spots in the eighth and ninth innings to claim a come-from-behind 9-7 win at Malibu. The victory marked career win No. 700 for John Savage. The four-hour, 10-minute game featured plenty of drama, with five ties and four lead changes. UCLA had 15 hits as a team, none more important than a go-ahead two-run homer from Michael Curialle in the ninth.ย

  • UCLA is 28-7 in midweek contests since the start of 2019 (7-6 in 2022)
  • In 2022, UCLA swept UCSB, LMU ... split with LBSU, CSF, Pepperdine ... and was winless against Omaha (0-1) and UCI (0-2)

  • The Bruins went undefeated in midweeks in 2019 (11-0) and 2021 (8-0)
